Nav having problems! (help)

I bought my car about 4 months ago and i never noticed any problems with the nav, about a month or 2 ago i noticed one day that it said i was driving on a road that was a mile east of where i was actually driving.

I took the car into acura and they replaced the DVD (they said it was scratched up) and let them know if this fixed the problem...

It has not, i think the issue has gotten worse, i notice it will say im at the wrong location at least once a day! Now its not only a mile off, it will say practically any location (one time i was driving down a main highway I-270 and it said i was in the middle of the ocean!).

Is this a common problem? has anyone else seen this before? I hope acura fixes it and doesn't try to dick me over...

Could be poor satellite coverage in your area for the GPS or the tint in your rear window is metallic and is interfering with your GPS antennae that is located on the rear deck of your TSX

i'm sure acura will fix it, you just need to find someone who knows what they are doing. it is probably the configurations on the actual nav unit that are causing the problems.

It's either your tint (ceramic and dye are safe for navi, semi-metallic is not) or the navi unit needs to be replaced. Basically it sounds like it's miscalculating...so either it's not getting the right info (tint) or the "calculator" is messed up.

The only navi problem I ever had was a couple of days ago. The navi told me to to stay on the freeway but the display said to take the other freeway. The voice then told me to take the other freeway. Then both the display and voice told me to take the original freeway. By then, it was too late and I was on the other freeway lol

It happend to me too. I took it to the dealership and they had the problem fixed by ordering a new DVD drive. If you're still under warranty it should be covered.

I went on a 1600+ mile trip (roundtrip) last week and when I punched in my destination address, my NAV screen told me that I only had like 500 miles (one way) to go to my destination. I knew for a fact that this was wrong. And when I hit the button for it to list the directions, in adding up all the miles shown on the directions is was the 800+ it should have been. But the first screen display was wrong. Not sure why it happened and it was the first time I've ever seen it do that.

Satellites are not located near big cities....they're orbiting the earth in space

Did they even say what kind of tint it is? Maybe they just found out what kind of problem it causes, and they're trying to weasel their way out? Maybe it's causing problems with one or two satellites, causing it to triangulate your location incorrectly? (ie: it thinks you're farther from a certain satellite than you really are...)

But anyway, now that you're getting the navi replaced, I hope it's the unit that's messing up and not something else

good luck

As the satellites are in space, being in a metro area is irrelevant. But if you're surrounded by tall buildings, your visibility to all the satellites will be impeded. Check the "Easter eggs" thread for a tip on how to see what satellites are locked on.

I'd bet that when the NAVI is "lost," you've got less than 6 satellites locked on.

GPS Nav in Acuras uses GPS signals + dead reconning. When the letters "GPS" are in white in the top left corner of the screen, you are in dead reconning mode which uses speedometer signal + a latteral accelerometer to determine if and how much you are turning. This can temporarely keep you on the right spot on the map (when you start rolling or when you are in a tunnel) until you get a solid GPS signal and the letters turn green.

As some have mentionned before, there is a constellation of 24 GPS satellites that cover the whole planet + some spares and some WAAS satellites that provide more accuracy to the basic signal. You need at least 3 sats to get a basic 2D nav (longitude & latitude) and at least 4 sats for 3D nav (+ altitude)

Again, if "GPS" is white, no or poor signal reception. If it is green, you are good to go and should be on the right spot on the map.

...sorry i never updated! i totally forgot after i got it fixed it turns out it was NOT the tint.

acura replaced the nav and it was having more problems than before. I swore to them it wasnt the tint but they couldnt go any further without me removing the tint, so i had it removed for free.

I took it back to acura and they confirmed that the nav that was installed by them a week before was also broken, so they replaced it and paid to have my tint reinstalled on the rear!

i was happy heh

so everything is working great now.
