My Clock/Radio/AC panels are out.

I was driving my TSX a few days ago and i realized that my Clock Radio and AC panels were all black. I couldnt see the time what station or track i was listening too or what the temperture settings i was on. I went to the dealer and said they would have to replace the whole center. This is so bad man i find myself having to go to the dealership like a routine in my life now. Acura really need to do a better job with there cars. They told me that it would take a week to get the parts. Man this sucks.

very common problem. try a search for "center console" for more info.

I'm just waiting for mine to go out, because I seem to get every problem reported here.

I thought the usual fix was to hold down the CD/AUX button for 5 seconds?
I know I can turn all the center console lights on/off like that.
well teh navi doesn't go off but you get the idea.

Not with the TSX, it's an electrical failure. Nothing to do with resetting.

iamhomin, whose tsx's center console was already replaced due to failure.

Also, lar, you seem pretty new here, so I'm guessing your TSX is new as well?

What's the production number for your TSX?

iamhomin, who's wondering if Acura adamently put an emphasis on the c.c. installs.

I had mine replaced. They had plenty of work to do to fix all the damage they did in replacing the unit.

Warn them ahead to be careful (or maybe not, usually they just get pissed at the suggestion that they might jag up your car, even though they usually do!)

Now I only wonder if the new one will do it again????

Dealer couldn't tell me if anything has been redesigned or if I got a redesigned one or not. I am guessing not and it will be another try down the road.

Yes, my panels went out weeks ago. The dealer told me its a common problem and defintely didn't have the part in stock. He told me the whole center console has to be replaced and the part comes in a box similiar to a "coffin." The part took over two weeks to come in and I finally have an appointment this Thursday. It requires a lot of labor and I am getting a loaner car. IU also hope that don't screw up anything else as I have a Navi in mt TSX.

It takes a week to get the new part in because most dealers don't stock a $700 part that isn't specifically for a person that has had a complaint. I will say that there is a bulletin for this and it is a somewhat common failure inside the audio head unit. Just call your dealer when your's goes out and give them your VIN so they can order your unit and save yourself a trip. It usually takes about an hour to install it once it comes in, and don't forget to take out your CDs when you go to get it swapped out. Otherwise, you get to wait a couple weeks until it gets back to the diagnostic test center where the factory guys take the unit apart. They won't do that at the dealer, so remember to take them out or remind the advisor at the dealer that you have them in the unit.

Oh, yeah...the search button is your friend.

Kurt,

My overhead pimp light comes and goes. I took my car to my dealer and they said that there is a way to turn it off (service mgr claims "the TL has this feature so should the TSX" ). I disputed his claim and he went and got a TSX manual. He couldn't find record of that feature.

Anyway, I finally had him agree to look at my car. Does this have anything to do with that TSB for the center console (i suspect probably not)? Is there a TSB for the overhead ambient light? Everything else works fine...HomeLink, Map Lights, etc.

Thanks,
SB

There is no control for it. You were right there. Its wiring is controlled by the panel that is for your map lights. They may want to actually check the lines inside that assembly for a loose connection if everything else is working (the usual culprit on that one). This problem has nothing to do with the bulletin for the audio unit, being that they are not only in different areas, but they're controlled by independent suppliers. There is also no bulletin for the map light fixture and the ambient light either. Don't go trying to take apart that panel to see if you could fix it yourself. That's what the warranty is for. it's an expensive part in there. Good luck getting it taken care of.

Unhappy

Are the clock and audio and temp lights on the center console designed to dim when the parking or front lights are turned on? Had daytime fog today and turned on the parking lights to be seen by others, and the aformentioned lights all dimmed by about 90% so that they were barely visible. Thought this was odd, as they've always been well illuminated while driving nites with front lights on. So tonite I noted the brightness of the c.c. lights upon starting the engine, and then (at nite) noted that they did indeed dim by about half upon turning the lights to parking and front. But since it is dark, even the dimmer lights still look quite bright--quite unlike their near invisibility during the daytime. If this is mentioned in the manual, I will read it later. Designed to work this way, or a prelude to the long-running c.c. lights out problem?

Just turn the knob under your speedometer.

I just pray that my HU display etc. dont short out, I know they will try to blame my aftermarket amps and speakers for causing the problem.

It's going to cost Alpine a ton of money not Honda.

Doesn't the knob under the speedometer control the gauge lighting only? It has nothing to do with the degree of illumination of the clock, audio, and HVAC lighting. Just read the manual and it mentions nothing about the degree of lighting of these features. Start your car in daytime. Note the illumination of clock, audio and Auto temp read-outs. Turn on the parking or head lights. You tell me if they dim to the point of barely visible.

With the headlights on, you can turn the knob to the right to bring the gauges and center console lights back to full brightness.

Rifleman -- On my '05, there are two modes for gauge cluster/center console brightness (they are controlled together using the right dial) -- one with exterior lights on, and another with exterior lights off. Whatever brightness level you last had selected for each mode is remembered by the car. If you keep your levels low at night with your lights on and bright during the day with lights off, the difference is definitely noticable, and normal.

With regard to the problem of turning the center console on/off try out the earlier suggestion to hold down the CD/XM button for 5+ seconds. I was surprised to see the entire console, clock and all, turn off. If I was not aware of this beforehand and inadvertently did this I would definitly think something was wrong.

DM and mhollender

Eureka! Apologize for being a little slow on the up-take on this one. Appreciate you two gents for your patience and clarification of this pesky little issue for me. Think I've been reading the forums a little too much and beginning to imagine problems where there are none. Coming from an eighteen year old beater I am still getting accustomed to a car that makes so many little adjustments automatically--whether you want it to or not. Thanks again.

Arrgh. This happened to me last Friday. The displays are only visible in bright direct sunlight.. at night it's completely dark. All the buttons are dark too.. something that I don't think happens when you hold the CD/AUX button to go into "stealth mode."

I found this thread, then called the dealer Saturday (Feb 12) to book an appointment. I'm going out of town, so the first time they could get me in is March 1. I called their parts dept. now to see if the replacement part would be in stock. I explained how I have to wait 2+ weeks to get it checked out, I don't want to then wait an additional week to wait for the part to come in. The guy said "No, they won't order that until they're sure that's what you need." He said often it's something else and doesn't require replacement of the whole unit.

Also, my CD player often has trouble reading CDs. Often on burned CDs but sometimes on officially pressed discs also. Happens most of the time on Shuffle or when skipping several tracks. It starts making noises then can never find the right track. For this reason, I wouldn't mind if they replaced the whole CD player.

The burned CD skipping might be due to you burning them at too high of a speed. Try reducing the burn speed to something like 8x and see if that helps.

This happened to me last weekend. My dealer knew instantly that this was the problem, told me about the TSB issued, and said that they'd order the part immediately. And this was all over the phone--they hadn't even seen the car yet!

So it sucks having no console lights, but at least my dealer is good.

And at least it's still under warranty!

Edit: It's funny that the lights for the dualzone-on, rear defroster, etc. still work....

Edit again: Does this problem happen to navi-equipped cars? Just curious.

Hey, Clutch. Yeah, sounds like your dealer is much better than mine (Delray Acura in Delray Beach, FL). When I first called the service dept. on Saturday I got a person right away, but the five times since then that I've called I got only a voice mailbox. I left a message that was never returned. It wasn't until I called the parts dept. today that I got to actually talk to someone again.

Yep, those lights are the little LEDS on individual buttons, not connected to the overall display.

I typically burn at only 4x anyway, MAYBE 8x, never higher. This is on a few-years old HP CD-RW drive. I'm looking to get an NEC DVD burner (3520a) soon, and maybe I'll have better results.

Yep. This is exactly what happened. I took it in Tuesday morning, he looked at it, and ordered the part. He said "IF it's in stock at ____, it'll be here Friday." He didn't say how long it would be otherwise, but that he'll call me when it gets in. Good thing I'm a patient person.

Although your warranty is out, give the dealer a call anyways. Sometimes they'll do it out of gratuity. If they won't do it, the replacement HVAC and Audio is refurbished. Less than $300 U.S.

called the dealer. They said they'd take it up with Honda Canada, and that since I'm so close to the warranty, and its a $$ part, that they'll likely be able to cover it, except the labor - likely $85 or so. Not too bad, it could have been much worse.

Lights went out on my TSX two days ago. I went to the dealership yesterday, and there is a new TSB that was release on Feb. 15, 2006. I had no problems at the dealership, they ordered the part and made an appointment for the service. It alls covered under warranty.

Spoke with the dealer today. Good news! Honda Canada is going to cover the $1200 part. All I have to pay is the $85 installation cost. Hats off to Acura/Honda for covering me even though my warranty has just expired.
