AT issue?

Exiting the highway after doing about 70mph for 23 miles & thought I'd put my car in neutral. It was was extremely tough to get it into neutral and it reved as soon as it went into neutral. I pressed harder on the braked and it reved even more! I couldn't get it to reoccur that night but the next day something else happened. I warmed up my ride and pressed all the was down on the brake, to make sure, yet it seemed just as hard to go from park to reverse.
Any thoughts?

If the rev goes up, it may be downshifting but then again, you're in neutral. But what's your reason for putting it in neutral, I've never found a use for it, while driving.

I'm not sure about him, but I sometimes frequently will put my car in neutral before I even get off the highway on my way home from school. I'm usually going about 75 and the most the mph's drop before actually exiting the highway is 10....5 is more typical. But I use it for gas mileage. If I didn't put my brake on, I'd still be going around ~40-45mph once I reached the intersection, and the intersection is close to 1/2 mile from the exit ramp, so I say it has some good.

It's also cool to drop into neutral in a similar situation right after you fill up. The MPG's soar!!!

My bad! After going 70mph, at the highway exit light, granted when it's red, I placed my car into neutral. So I'm at the red light putting my car in neutral. Why? Just something really random I thought of doing.

I am curious how you think this saves on gas mileage. My understanding of how (all) engines work was when you coast, there is no fuel going to the engine, it is just compressing air. Putting the vehicle in neutral would require using fuel to mantain idle speed in the engine. So coasting is more fuel efficient than neutral, yes?
