how to protect hood

I drive most of my miles on hiways and want to protect my hood. I am not fond of the bras available. Does the 3M type protection have to be removed prior to washing/waxing?

Many here will recommend a "clear bra" I believe it's a 3M product.

I put a clear bra on my new tsx the day after I got it a year and a half ago....it is great! It gives me peace of mind and does its job.
