Help: 04 TSX MT burning oil, out of warranty?
Hey guys! You're my only hope. Here's the deal.
Since the day I bought my brand new 04 TSX 6 speed, it has always burned a little oil. It started out at maybe around a quart per 3000 miles with mobile one. That eventually turned into a quart per 500 miles at roughly 30,000 on the clock. After switching to Castrol GTX, it's been at around a quart per 1500 miles for at least the past 80,000 miles.
Recently it jumped to a quart per 1000 miles, so I'm starting to worry. The car has 112,000 miles on it, and I've always been good to it. I usually get 34 miles per gallon on the highway, and I'm still on the stock clutch. You can't get there by driving like a jerk.
Anyway, so I have taken my car in to have an oil consumption test performed. I read about another user on this forum who had that done, but I did not find the post during a search. With 112,000 miles on it, it will be an uphill battle to convince Acura to do $13k of work on an out of warranty car. However, I'm almost certain I received a letter in the mail almost a year and a half ago, entailing how my factory warranty had been extended to 120,000 miles due to an odometer malfunction. Does anyone have this paper work they can scan or fax me? I need this badly. I would be eternally grateful.
I could also use some advice with dealing with Acura. I have owned over 25 Honda's and Acura's over my days, between motorcycles and cars. In fact, I own 7 honda motorcycles as of right now. This is the first product from Honda I have ever seen burn oil. Has any TSX owner had their engine replaced here?
Is there any wiggle room on the warranty? Does anyone have any suggestions? I would greatly appreciate any advice that you may have. I haven't even finished paying this car off yet. I'm the original owner.
Thanks!!

My intuition is that you're going to be on your own for the bill. Acura is certainly going to be quite resistant to dropping that kind of money as good will gesture. It will be helpful if you've got documentation of the problem in the past, ideally from a Honda/Acura dealer. I think the best you may be able to hope for is partial coverage, such as Acura picking up the labor cost.
I've heard about the odometer problem but I don't know the specifics. Best of luck to you.
Oh, and
on the bike collection.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. I know, the fate of my car lies in finding this paper work that states my warranty was extended. I'm just besides myself that this would happen to a Honda product, let alone my own Honda product.
I know there was a class-action lawsuit against Acura for the odometer readings. I'm really hoping to get some where with that

Yeah, the documentation you're looking for is a result of that lawsuit. You shouldn't really need it unless the service manager is being an ass about it. They know what the deal is and forcing you to prove it to them would be strong sign that you should be talking to some one else.
There are small number of other users who have had problems with oil consumption. At least one guy (username "curls" if I recall correctly) got his engine replaced as result but that was under warranty and after much "discussion" with Acura. It is not a common problem and as far as I know, no body has found a common cause. Do you know if you're getting good compression in all cylinders?

I'm positive I received literature increasing the power train warranty through 120,000 miles. There have been over 3 recalls on my TSx, 2 of which resulted in warranty mileage extensions. I am digging through 5 years of paper work as I type this.

I also have a 04 TSX. The only warranty extension notice that I received, other than the 5% extension from the lawsuit, was for the audio/HVAC panel lights problem. The warranty for that item only was extended to 7 years/100,000 miles.

I know this isn't the best solution - but I'd highly recommend calling the car talk guys. if you've ever listened to them, they answer a lot of things like this off of the top of their head. try it out - can't hurt.

Perhaps, but I doubt they are going to tell me anything that's not already apparent from these forums. Yes, I do believe it was the HVAC that was extended.
Oh well, we're going to see how well this works despite being out of warranty. I am the original owner, that has to be worth something, right?? =D

The worst they can say is no.
One reason to support your claim is that you're still driving on your original clutch. This means you do not abuse your car.
Another reason is with the amount of vehicles you have, they probably should label you as a VIP. Reason with them and see if they can help you out.

Someone stole "My Garage"
'Twas me with the short block replacement after a lot of back and forth with the dealer. But in short, if you are getting good compression (even across the board), don't see any leaks on the driveway, don't see much in the way of smoke when you start the car in the morning, etc... then you likely have whatever my car had -- my service manager and I suspected out-of-round cylinder bores that even a full rebuild wouldn't fix.
You might be best off looking for a bottom-end from a 2004-2008 TSX and bolting it up if you have the time and skill (or a friend with both). At this point, the $90 Helm's service manual would be WELL worth your money.
For what its worth, the 06-08 blocks should give you an extra few HP as there is a reduction in pumping losses by nature of their improved design.
