Hard Start during Cold Weather

My 05 TSX acts like it doesn't want to start in the cold. It will crank for a while before it starts. My 97 Toyota starts no problem. I live in STL and it gets cold here. Has anyone had this problem? if so is it something I should be concerned about?

Mine cranks real slow in the cold too, but has started every time, even makes a nice squeel sound for a few seconds when it is about 10 degrees or less.

This is normal. Most 4 cyl hondas I've driven sound like they have trouble starting. My TSX has never not started even in sub zero temps.

TSX has a weak battery and starter IMHO, plus the fact that it's a high(er) compression engine. takes a bit to start it.

Ditto. This is the first time mine has been this bad and this is its 3rd Winter. I'm thinking of getting a yellow top!!

The factory battery is nothing to brag about, but any battery will lose a good deal of starting power in extreme cold, as opposed to say, room temperature.

I had an Optima Red-top in my old car for at least 4 years before I sold it, and it never showed any signs of giving up. They will usually last at least twice that long ive read. Spendy battery but you get what you pay for i guess.

Acura might have a battery heater available on its accessory list. Does pretty much what it sounds like it should do...keeps the battery near room temperature for better cold starts.

Just ran across something interesting in the TSX quick start guide. Says engine sometimes will seem to take a while to start but it is doing it on purpose because of the pollution control meeting the SEV-2 (or whatever) standard. Could this be related?

that might be a different situation, b/c you can also experience the slow crank in the summer too. i've experienced this, and i don't think it's anything to worry about.

during the past few days, on my first try, the engine does not crank at all. it's not until my 2nd try that the engine cranks. i find it odd, b/c during these few days, it's been cold, but not that cold.

earlier during this winter, there were some really cold nights, and the engine has cranked on its first try...

Does anyone know where a good place is to buy a red top or yellow top battery. This battery seems to die fairly quick if playing stereo with car off.

That is why I use Mobil 1 (full synthetic). Saves the battery and starter as the required cranking power is significantly reduced

this is normal and it's not really battery related.. i have an 06' and it takes a little cranking time before it starts.. As mentioned it's because the tsx is low emission, also mines revs to like 2,500 RPMs for like 5-10 seconds after start.. again, mostly for emission reasons.

that helps, also maintain a good battery. i have no problems starting the car with the oem battery, takes a couple of cranks in recent -14 windchill weather!
