front door "thunk"

Hello all,

I am new to this site and I am a new owner. I just picked up a 2004 grey automatic last week.

I have a question about the noise that the front driver side door makes when closing it. It sounds a little hollow and tinny. Is this common? Has anyone tried to fix or modify the sound?

Acura tried to "engineer" the sound of the doors to make them sound more substantial. LOL, I guess you don't think it worked. If you add sound dampening materials inside the door then the sound will change. Dynmat and Cascade products come to mind. I put Cascade Vmax in my doors while I was changing out the front door speakers. I haven't made an effort to notice whether the "thunk" changed but I have noticed a significant decrease in road noise.

BTW, congrats on your purchase and welcome to Acurazine.

When you added VMax Jlukja, did that reduce any of the background noise?

I'm especially wondering about what kind of change it made while driving 65+ on the freeway.

Thanks.

I haven't been on the freeway yet.

But, the road noise is reduced quite a bit at around 45mph. Road noise is one of the little things that really bugged me about the TSX. After reading posts here, and really listening, I determined that it was due to the OEM tires. With the Vmax in the doors the tire noise is pushed much more into the background.

Wow, thanks for the prompt and helpful feedback. What a great community to be a part of, as well as a great resource. This car was originally purchased in Septmeber of 2003, so it was probably one of the early models, althougth, isn't this the "same" car that has been driven in Europe for sometime now?

yes, 2004 was the first year it was offered as the Acura TSX but its been in Europe as the Accord (slight differences) before that. Not sure for how long though.

I thought the same thing in the beginning - wasn't crazy about the sound, almost like I was going to break it. You'll learn to live with it though, and it's not that bad if you don't pull the door shut too hard.

I hear it when I close the door with a window open. With the windows closed, it sounds solid when I close it.

Funny, I like the way the door sounds when you slam it shut.

Go close an Audi's door, you'll change your view...

I was going to bring up that point. If the door is slammed shut it will sound different than if you just let it close. I am getting tired of telling passengers not to slam my door shut.

It sounds a lot better when you close the doors with the windows up.

After driving a 2004 with Cascade in the doors for almost a year, I got a 2005 service loaner.

Not only was there a huge diff on closing the door, but the road noise was definitely different.

Ken recommended cascade to me also. I agree with joerockt. I put it in and it made a BIG difference.
