Engine Braking
Engine Braking
So, sometimes i use SS mode to slow down if i dont want to use the brakes. I dont downshift unless im in the right rpm zone for the downshit. is this still bad for the tranny? i was reading the 2g TL forum, they said its 'a big no no'.
Alot of people will say that and reason that it's cheaper for brakes then a trans. and the added "stress" is bad for the tranny. Ha, can't really argue with that point though. I've always owned a manual since even before i was legally allowed to drive and i've done it in all my cars and never have had any problems. I could def. see how this could add a little stress but don't see what the big deal is. Not sure how bad it is for automatics though. My wifes sister has a prelude with that sport shift thing and she does it ALL the time and has NEVER had any problems.
eingine braking is fine, but usually it's used to supplement your brakes. When I had to take driving lessons (required 6 hours before you can get your license), the instructor just spent the time teaching me specialized stuff since I already knew how to drive. For one lesson, he brought me to a mountainous area, and he had me start all the way at the top. He then had me go down (without touching the gas...it was a lesson on controlling speed). Anyway, I was taught then to use engine braking to allow the brakes to cool down a bit (with the use of brakes to maintain the speed).
I think as long as the engine braking isn't extreme (ie: downshifting so the rpm's jump up close to redline), it's fine.

Well I do it all the time and I dont have any problems yet. I have an 04 with 51000 miles on it. I do it almost everyday when I have the car. Mostly I use the sportshift when driving. I know I should have got the manual, but the wife didnt know how to drive it and didnt want to learn. Bad mistake for me. But Im still happy with the car.
