The End of My Oil-Burning 04' TSX..

Hello all..

I am a former TSX owner (04' MT NAV) and wanted to provide some information about my experience as a TSX owner because of all the help I received by reading about all of your experiences...

Most notably, buring oil. I purchased my car certified in 2006 and it drove normally for a while. I did tons of research and found this car by far to be the best value in terms of options, gas mileage, looks, great NAV system, performance/price. The only gripe I have with this car is the fact that it gets most of its torque at high RPMs. Anyhow, some time in summer of 2007 I was at a wedding driving to a reception and the oil light came on. I pulled over and the car was basically out of oil. I was on the phone with a friend for hours because I could not believe that such a thing could happen as I have had religious oil changes at 3k intervals and drive relatively conservatively (not taking advantage of the torque I could be getting at those high RPMs). I filled the car with oil and went on my way. I checked and noticed that the tailpipe was extremely black. Some at the time told me that the car was on its way out, some said not to worry. To make a long story short I have what appears to be another of the same of some on this board of having a car that burns riducilous amounts of oil. I estimate that now (1-1 1/2 years later) I could not go 3k without having the engine seize for lack of oil. I've been checking and adding oil regularly. I have had the oil light some on once since that day, and I pulled over and filled the car with oil, which I've been keeping in my trunk. I've noticed no issues with performance, etc.

The dealership that sold me the car told me that what I was experiencing was 'normal combustion.' After having a transmission problem recently and 90k miles on the car, due for a clutch soon, I traded it in. This seemed to be the best option based on information on this board --- so, thanks.

Too bad you didn't catch it before your warranty was up, because I had the same problem and had it taken care of at 90,000km (about 55k miles). New engine (basically).

And by the way, this engine makes really good torque for a 4-cyl down low. I think something like 90% of peak torque is available at 2000rpm. It's just that it's a higher-strung engine that it feels more powerful in higher RPM's -- that's horsepower, not torque.

That's the risk when buying a used car. You don't know how the car was treated by the previous owner. My 04 owned since new doesn't burn any oil, even after a trackday with 6x 15 minute sessions of full 5000-7200rpm constant running.

It's on the high end for what most people see but Acura doesn't consider it a serviceable problem till 1 quart per 1000 miles. I think that info came curls' thread. I know that's some member here was told by ACS.

This thread makes the K24 sound like a rotary engine.

^^ Haha, it does. Luckily the vast, vast majority of us burn next to nothing.

In general: If you drive it normally (redline few times every day but not all the time), the oil consumption is not an issue. If you drive it hard (trackdays), every K series burns oil. Some more some less, but they all do and it´s normal. Another issue is if it takes that much, as mentioned earlier, under normal driving.

I don't agree 100%. My engine is driven hard (been to 6 trackdays, which is about 540 minutes worth of keeping the engine between 5000 and 7300rpm), but doesn't consume oil. I know of another which is driven gently (lady driver, car never been to the track) but drinks oil like a mofo. The difference is that I use light throttle until the engine oil temperature reaches about 160 ºF. She on the other hand drives it with 1/2 to 3/4 throttle as soon as the engine is started when cold. I can literally smell the burnt oil coming out of the exhaust (with some nice blue-white smoke)

The engine is good when treated well, but if you mess up once, then it starts giving you problems.
