Don't Shoot Me....

I've already searched through 9 pages of posts with "rattle" in them somewhere, I am not a nOOB, I'm just desperate.

I have recently acquired a rattle in my AT shifter, while stopped at traffic lights etc. If I put the car in neutral, it goes away, but in drive (or reverse) the shifter shakes against something.

A) Does anyone else have this.
B) More importantly; does anyone know how to fix it.
C) Playing loud music or buying an exhaust are NOT fixes.

I thought (for 3 months anyway), that I was one of the fortunate to be rattle free...

Help.

I'm a fairly regular reader of this forum (since December 03) and I don't recall reading about this particular rattle. My condolences. I think that you're the first person reporting this problem.

Thanks DZUY.

I didn't want to post anything with "rattle" in it, but after all that searching I was going blind....

hmm, so do you notice the rattle in your shifter!?

if it was me, i would take off the shifter and put some insulation in there somehow and see if it stopped rattling.

It's definitely the shifter, like I said, in neutral it stops, but when the car is in gear the engine vibration makes it rattle against something.

I just don't like the prospect of tearing apart the center console to get at the shifter...

don't know. i would take it to the dealer, i'm sure they are used to getting tsx's back for rattles...

and yea, if you took the shifter apart, they wouldn't work on it.

I have rattles in my AT shifter too. But I try to ignore it until I have some time to tear into the shifter.

Better safe than sorry.

Bring it to your dealer and inform them of your problems.

I had this issue when I first took delivery of my TSX. The shifter plate was making squeeking sounds when I would accelerate, brake, and stop at red lights. The solution was to line the underpart of the shifter plate with felt tape. It has since been almost 1 year and it has not returned.

Thanks for the responses everyone. It just happens to be one of those rattles that "comes and goes". With the 36 - 38 degree weather we've been having, it doesn't do it as much. So I fear the dreaded Cannot duplicate problem response.

I'll have them check it out on my 16k service.

This sounds like something I noticed when I picked up my TSX. I noticed a squeak-like sound coming from the 5AT shifter area. It took a while to figure out what it was but it turned out to be the silver shift gate rubbing against the underside of the black center console area. The noise was coming from the area just right of the PARK position. I can replicate the sound by pressing on the shift gate in that area. If you mess with it for a minute it will go away.
