CV Joint Issue? How much play is normal?
Having a wheel shimmy problem, described here:
https://acurazine.com/forums/1g-tsx-problems-fixes-128/shimmy-all-speeds-not-tires-what-then-867431/
Went through everything with the tires. Changed the tires on and off three times and RF balanced multiple times on multiple machines. Had rim runout checked with tires off them. No isses.
Dealer says the axles are tight, but while at the tire shop on a whim I put on some gloves and grabbed each axle and there is a real good amount of up and down play in the whole assembly.
When I grab the axle in the middle and push/pull it up and down, the axle moves up and down at the inner joint about 3-4mm, with a clicking noise. The movement I see on the inner end seems to be related to the axle fit into the transmission. There is no movement at the hub end.
Is this a proper amount of play here? Do I have an issue? I go back to the dealer becuase the car is still under a powertrain warranty. But they keep pointing to the tires.

Suggestion, go to the Service Manager. Show him all the paperwork on the balance and checks on the wheels and tell him that:
1) He is to go on a test drive and you will show him the problem.
2) They can do a balance check on the tires, and then you and him will have a test drive.
3) If you can then duplicate the problem, he will change both axles and the intermediate shaft under warranty without arguing.
4) If the balance solves the problem, you will pay for it.

Solved.
It WAS the tires. I had the Michelins remounted and runout checked. RF Balanced and the car is rock solid.
Problem? My tire shop is slathering on more tire installation lube on the rims and tires than Tori Lane does before she films a new scene. This resulted in tons of slipping of the tires on the wheels, causing imbalance and excessive runout.
