Changing gears without clutch depressed/6MT

Guys, is it normal to be able to switch through the gears of a 6MT while having the car turned off?? Something seems not right about that. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Yes, that's totally normal. The clutch doesn't do anything when the engine is stopped.

There is nothing abnormal about that. Any manual transmission will allow it.

You can also take the trans out of gear without using the clutch if you are about to upshift, or just want to pop it into neutral the lazy way while driving.

Just dont try to upshift the trans without using the clutch...most car transmissions wont allow this, and will cause damage if done too much.

Just because it's true doesn't mean you should do it.

i've learned how to blip the clutch now and throw the gears into place, without grinding and anything.. i'm sure its not good for the clutch, but its fun.. and i only do it when i'm feeling frisky :p

Your clutch won't give a damn, but the gearbox sure will.

If the engine is OFF:
going through gears without using the clutch is fine
(that's the original question)

If the engine is ON:
NEVER switch gears without using the clutch while driving. Doing so stresses the synchronizers on your tranny (Do a search if you have doubts). A tranny costs a lot more to replace than a clutch.

Try it. cruise the car in 2nd gear and keep a super light foot on the gas to "float" the drivetrain (so the engine isnt driving the transmission, and the transmission isnt driving the engine) and It will come right out of gear easily without the clutch.

If you're too hard on the gas, or all the way off of it, it wont let you do it though, because the engine and trans will be "locked" together. This is partially how you shift gears in a semi-tractor, cept in one of those you can actually upshift to the next gear clutchless, where as in a car transmission it wont let you do that (Without being obviously abusive to the tranny.)

Passenger car manual transmissions are different than heavy load machinery - significantly, most truck transmissions have no synchros. Oh and they're much larger.

While you can pop it out of gear, and even shift it into gear without the clutch, this is a short trip to a large bill. Sure, everyone driving a stick pops it out once or twice by accident or whatever, but don't make this a habit.

Fortunately for me, the trips to the dealership (Brookfield, WI ACURA) have been pleasant and they have done wondeful work and gave me discounts on everything I have brought it in for. I also gave the service department a call yesterday for a radio code, they walked me through it over the phone and problem solved and now I can listen to my Sirius radio again
