A/C Question

We had the compressor replaced on my wife's 04 last year by a shop that was.... inexpensive. Now the A/C is blowing hot. I borrowed a hose with a gauge and got a can or 134a just to see if the freon was low. The compressor started running right after I opened the valve on the can but the gauge read that the pressure was already "in the red."

I'm an old paint and body guy and I always had someone else do my A/C work so I don't have a clue where to start. Any help would be appreciated.

No warranty and if there was a leak, I would think the gauge would not be reading high.

There are several A/C threads here already....maybe you have one of the known problems (compressor, relays...).

This is weird since it was recently serviced. Usually, when you have no A/C activity but a high pressure reading, there is a high concentration of non-condensables in the system (usually water vapor). I'm pretty sure every A/C shop can assay your refrigerant to determine if it is contaminated or not. They then perform a flush and recycle to remove the contaminants. This is something you cannot do at home because you cannot evacuate the system, only add more refrigerant, which I would advise against to avoid blowing another compressor. Also, the shop can perform a leak-down test of the entire system to determine if there are any leaks (likely on the liquid side) of the system.

When the compressor was replaced last year, did the mechanic flush out the entire system? If it was contaminated with metal shards, the entire system needs to be flushed (or usually replaced, hence the insanely high cost of repair). I'm guessing just the compressor was replaced and the system was not cleaned, which would be a problem.

Hi,

I have 170k on my 04 TSX. My AC is starting to have strange problem too. Maybe someone here can help me out.

It was hot out there and I set the temp to 68F, the AC worked fine. No problem all day long. Cool like hell.

But if it was hot out there and I set the temp to maybe 62F, both the radiator fans and the AC clutch will all cut off. After couple minutes, everything turned back on but they were all cut out again.

As soon as I set the AC back to 68F, it ran without problem any more.

So, I turned the AC off until I got home. Later at night, I ran the meters to both the low and high outlets to check the pressure. The low was about 25lbs. The high was like 320lbs! It was about 89F outside.

I ran the meters to my 98 Accord. The low was about 25lbs but the high was just 190lbs.

I also ran the AC self diagnostic, it said everything was fine.

Would someone help me to see what else I can check?

Thx!!!!
