A/C Failure Costing $4000
#201
I guess I can jump on this old thread.
I have an 04 6-speed manual with navi.
I had the compressor replaced at around 60k as a part of a repair after a flood.
I have always had issues coming and going in relation to the A/C
The whirring sound I heard for a long time, usually when waiting in car rider line to pick up the kid at school.
The A/C still worked even in the Texas heat. It was about 4.5 years ago now that it slowly died.
It started by not blowing cool air at any fan setting over 3, then 2, then 1. It also would not blow cold air if on automatic, it had to be manually set.
Eventually it just stopped blowing cool air at all.
I had brought it to multiple places and they all seem to thing it has to do with a control board behind the radio area.
Told me this board was over $1,000 by it's self.
On a side note I also do not have lights in the radio, a/c area. That has been most of the time I have owned the car.
I bought the car with 38k miles on it in 2007.
I currently have 215k miles and this is the 4th summer of no A/C
I am trying to weigh between having this finally repaired or moving on and getting a new car.
The caveat is no car payment and other than the A/C (and mostly defrost) it still runs well.
The compressor etc are not getting power, all relays, restores etc have been replaced and checked.
As far as this "control board" is this a different board than the PCM board for the light issue? part # 3917ASECA51
How can I check the compressor for the "Black Death" grenade? Would it need to be removed?
Thanks

Any update on this issue? My trusty 06 6MT with just 60K miles on it apparently blew its compressor - the local mechanic wants $2,300+ to fix it which is not worth in this car. Anyone recently have a good will experience at a dealer?

So after a second opinion and estimate I got the car fixed at a local garage: $260 in parts (compressor, o-rings and drier - from Advance Auto with lifetime warranty) and $550 in labor. Despite other folks saying that when the unit "grenades" everything needs to be replaced, I didn't find that - the above was all was needed.

What year was your car? Mine is a 07 with 108k on it currently. The only issue I have with the A/C system is the woop sound when it's on the lower settings and I am idle at a stop light. I think this noise is from water in the system from my researching. Other than that it has been blowing really cold air since I bought it used in 09.
