Question broken gas pedal

The pedal has been broken since I bought the car and the dealer won't fix it unless i pay. I didn't care then but now that i have all the major issues taken care of it's getting on my nerves alot more then it used to.
It seems that whatever holds the bottom of the gas pedal to the floorboard is broken. I noticed that there is a plastic "plate" on the floorboard that has a tab that moves front to back. I'm assuming that the pedal has another tab attached to it that locks/inserts on this floorboard plate and that the tab on the floorboard plate moves so you can pull out the pedal if need be.
I've never seen one together so i don't know if i need the pedal assembly or the floorboard plate. Honestly i'd love to replace the pedals but not paying for the euro r ones. I'm looking at the ones you drill/screw onto the existing pedals.
First question- what would i need to fix my pedal? it'll tilt side to side and hangs up occasionally and is SUPER annoying. Do i need the pedal assembly or the floorboard plate that it attaches to?
Second question- Do the pedals that need to be drilled/screwed on fit onto the stock gas pedal or can I remove the entire plastic pedal but mount the new pedal onto the metal assembly rod that the stock pedal mounts to?
horrible descriptions but i don't kow the technical names on these things.

Hmm, well the price is 63 bucks. Apparently the only way to buy it is to buy the ENTIRE pedal assembly. Firewall bracket down to the little plate that clips into the floor. Not that bad in price but there has got to be a way to replace the plasic pedal with something better. hmm..oh well.
Thank you by the way!!

This might sound stupid, but are you sure it's broken? I only ask as I've disconnected mine from the floor before and it can kind of be a pain in the ass to get it to click back into place.

If the part that locks has broken off, I'd use a flatish wedge (made of wood) and jam it into the gap.

umm, I thought it was, I couldn't find any tab or anything on the bottom of the pedal that would hold it into place. The tab is there on the floorboard piece just nothing on the pedal.
hmm, i'll check again but can you guys describe what the tab on the pedal should look like or where it is located? that would be awesome if i was just a dumbass and couldn't get it in the slot......ha! and don't say spit on it
