Another 1-2 Shift Annoyance
Another 1-2 Shift Annoyance
One thing that kind of bugs me about the notorious rift between 1 and 2 on the 6MT is having to upshift during a sweeping left turn from a stop. As frequently happens here from a left turn signal on a wide highway.
Does this bug anyone else? Or am I just OCD on this?
I just dont like having to rev up to 4000 in a left turn if I'm not trying to be rodney racetrack. Other than that, the low 1 is a minor annoyance. I am somewhat perplexed that Honda engineers would design it that way to keep an extra shift out of 0-60. That just reeks of Detroit engineering to me.

sigh. another 1-2 shift thread?
i dont understand why so many complain, it's not like you dont know you're buying a close ratio tranny.
and to be honest, i dont understand what you are trying to say. you have to shift up when you make a left from a stop? which happens alot on the highway?
:wtf:

Tell me about it.... the 1-2 shift is my worst
I find that if i shift early (~2-2.5k rpm) it goes relatively smooth, but the drawback is, a grandma driving an echo will be tailing you throughout the turn. I haven't really rev that high (above 4k rpm) to perform this shift, because that's ridiculous for city driving....Also, my left foot stays on the clutch longer in order to keep it smooth..
the shifter however, became less notchy compare to when my car was new. but anyway, i think this is the most annoying thing about this car.

I think you guys just need more experience with driving an MT.
Complaining about shifting out of 1st to 2nd usually come from drivers still trying to perfect their shifting/timing with driving a manual. It will come with more experience.
IMHO TSX 6MT is one of the smoothest and I have no problems shifting.

With maybe a 2.xxx first gear, the shift point would not be necessary in a sweeping left (as in crossing several lanes of traffic, i.e. a highway or wide road). This is one of the few instances where it makes a practical difference when you drive. Otherwise, it's just an early shift point and not a very big deal.
And I should clarify, I don't have any trouble making the shift. The nature of the turn is such that rpms drop adequately to make a very smooth 1-2 shift without much thought. It's just having to shift in the middle of a turn, even when not trying to haul a$$.

Not a compaint for me...Actually, I've been recently just skipping 1st. At a stop, I'll keep it in second, blip the throttle to 3-4k and go. Pretty smooth...If I wanna launch, its in 1st.

I do agree that shifting during a left turn shouldn't really be an issue, though. Every car I've driven was like this. 1st is for crawling and drag racing.
Personally, who cares. When I start from 1-2, sometimes it goes really smooth and the car shoots forward quick, and some times the whole process just feel plain clunky. I am so used to it and don't even mind it at all. I did find that if I use my left toes to work the clutch instead of the whole foot, the gear shifting process could go pretty smooth. At the end, this is so insignificant.

Ok. Ok. I have taken pains to note that my MT-driving buddies do NOT have to upshift in most left turns and do not have to wind up to screeching rpms. Maybe I'm just not as sensitive to their rpms as my own. These include a Contour V6, a G35 Sedan, and a CRX.
The Contour has signicantly lower hp, but higher torque. The G35 we all know about, and the CRX is semi-similar to the TSX, but lacks the close/long ratio MT.

even my friends audi you have to.
well i guess you don't have to, but why would you want the rpm to stay high?
i guess i dont really understand what the big deal is. shifting is that hard to do while you turn is it?
