2nd gear grinding

I've had my TSX for a few months now and still can't seem to get the hang of that 1-2 shift while in high RPMs. Second always grinds on its way in. It's pretty quick, but obviously not the normal "snick" you get when shifting. It sounds like the dogs enguage, then jump a tooth. I know the 8th generation Civic Si's have problems with third gear, so do first gen TSX's have a similar second gear issue, or do I still suck at my first 6-speed tranny? If it's a common problem, does anyone know of a fix for it?

I've experienced the same issue even when the car (04) was new. You can either slow down the shifting, or replace the tranny fluid with something better than the oem fill.

I was planning on changing the tranny fluid with probably Amsoil MTF once all the paperwork is done. What did you change to?

I'm currently using GM syncromesh - friction modified. So far so good.

From what I've read on the board, when you drain the MTF fluid, you only drain about 1/3 of it out. Then you replace it with 3 quarts, which means there's a total of nine quarts in there. Is there an easy way to get more of it out than just the 3 quarts, or should I just do the partial change 7 or 8 times to get 90-95% of it changed? (Yes, I've read that 3 drains and refills gets you 96%, but unless the fuild doesn't mix well, that's mathmatically not true.)

I believe what you read is for AT fluid change. MT takes slightly over 2 qts and it's just a simple drain and fill.

Ah, it may have been. I had to scroll down a few posts to find it and I probably just missed that it was for AT not MT. I would assume the owner's manual has a basic set of instructions to do this so I guess I just have to get the fluid ordered Thanks for the help JTso.

If you drain one third of the fluid three times:

1/3 x 1/3 x 1/3 = 1/27 = .037

Which means that only 3.7% of the fluid that's in there was not changed. This assumes the fluid is completely mixed.

It is mathematically true.

First change yeilds you 66.6% old fluid and 33.3% new. Then you change 1/3 of that mixture, which means you're draining 1/3 of the 66% old fluid. You'll have 2/3 of the 66% mixture of old and new in the mix, which yeilds you 44.4% of the original dirty oil and 56.6% new oil. You then drain 1/3 of the 44.4% mixture, yeilding 29.6% of the original oil remaining and 70.4% new oil. That's three drains and refills, yeilding only a 70% change.

If you don't quite follow that, think of it like this. You start with all old oil, then drain 1/3 of it leaving 2/3's. You then have 2/3 of what you started with. Then in your next drain, you do it again, and leave 2/3's of the remaining old oil in the tranny. Then you do it a third time, again leaving 2/3's of what's left in there.
For the first change the math should be: (2/3)*100%=66%.
For the second: (2/3)*66.6%(What's left)=44.4%
For the third: (2/3)*44.4%(What's left)=29.6%
That leaves you with 29.6% of the old oil left in the tranny and 100%-29.6%=70.4% new oil in the tranny. So three 1/3 changes, yeilds 70% new oil, not 96%
