2004 TSX Sputters

Hey guys my 2004 TSX sputters at random it has 65k on it. It is not throwing any codes it does it at idle sometimes at at high speeds also. It does not do it all the time. I have tried different gas stations also same problem. Any help would be great.

Are you using at least 91 octane? Have you had any loss in fuel economy or any other symptoms?

65K? I would suggest swapping out some new spark plugs, yeah! Simple DIY is available on this site and it only costs about $50 for the plugs. Do that and see if the problem goes away. Even if it doesn't, it is still time to change plugs. Good Luck!

I thought the spark plugs don't need to be replaced until 110,000 miles?

Good point, but parts go bad before they are expected to, all the time . . .

Also, I think at that mileage they are not in their optimal performance.

no i haven't checked out the air sensor or the map sensor. What should I be looking for? I ordered a scan tool that has freeze function available it will be here monday and I ordered new plugs. Anyone think it may be one of the coils?

My suggestion would be to first get a bottle of Chevron Techron and see if you get any improvement. You may just have a bad tank of gas. If the plugs are bad, you usually will get a check engine light. The other option is to check the gap and make sure it is within the specifications for your car.

Sounds similar to the problem I was having. Finally through a code. It was the main O2 sensor. Air/Fuel ratio sensor.

Purrs like a kitten now.

Not hard to change, although you do have to get under the car. Here's a link to the thread I started a few weeks ago when my car threw the code. One end of the sensor is in the engine bay, while the other at the bottom of the header, before the cat. The diagram will help.

Only thing is, my car was throwing a code so it was easy to determine what the problem was. The part is ~$200-250. I hate to see you buy one and then have it not be the problem. How bad are the sputters? Does the RPM gauge jump slightly when sitting idle? I drove around like that for 30,000 km's (19K miles) before it threw a code. Trips to the dealer before that solved nothing.

Sometimes at idle the rms go nuts and it stalls. not all the time though. the other thing it does is when you get off it at high speed and try and get back on it she sputters and the rpms jump around.

My car never stalled. Although I think it came close a couple of times. It did sputter at high speeds like you said but I don't think it was as bad as you're describing.

I'd really suggest a trip to the dealer or mechanic. Unless someone else can chime in. But I don't think this is a common problem.

When I was buying. Dealer was the cheapeast, It was $250. Keep in mind I'm in Canada so its likely less in the US. Auto parts stores may be cheaper down there. I was quoted as high as $650 from a Napa.

Any or All of those items listed will throw a code if they have failed (Spark plugs, MAP sensor or O2 Sensor) You might want to have the engine and transmission mounts checked
they can cause the vehicle to feel like it is running rough.

Talking

ok well i was drriving the car last night and it did it again. I just purchased a actron super scan tool and hooked it up to the car it throws a pending code of P2A00 the description is O2 Bank 1 Sensor 1. Looks like the O2 sensor on the upstream is the problem. If you dont have a scan tool they are on sale on amazon for 99 dollars shipped that will save you 200 dollars. Thanks for all the help.
