116K Miles on 2005 TSX, 2nd Clutch Replacement, Flywheel, etc.

Hi, everyone ~

My 2004 TSX needed it's first clutch replacement at 56k miles. Now it's at 116k miles and just having its second clutch replacement. I have two topics of questions about this and would appreciate any insights/opinions that you can offer.

(1) Flywheel: The mechanic who is doing this says that the shop that did the first clutch replacement used an aftermarket flywheel that is incompatible with the OEM clutch replacement kit, and that he needs to replace the flywheel again for an additional $200 to make the OEM clutch fit despite the fact that the flywheel is ok. Does this sound legitimate to you? Would an after market flywheel be incompatible with the OEM clutch replacement kit? My understanding is that after market parts generally are compatable with OEM parts.

(2) Rust: The mechanic also says that the "transmission is rusted out" so that getting access to the clutch took him an extra half day's work. This also strikes me as odd. I am not particularly knowledgeable about cars, but aren't transmissions generally made of aluminum or an alloy that wouldn't rust? Perhaps he is referring to rust on the bolts? Asking him directly is an option here, but I want to be armed with a little better understanding than I have now before I do that.

Thank you in advance, and best regards,

Jane

I just got my clutch done on my 2005 TSX 2 days ago. My answers are based on my recent experience and what the mechanic told me.

1. For the flywheel, the stock one is a dual-mass flywheel (google it to get more info). There are a few shops that have the ability to resurface dual-mass flywheels. The alternative that was suggested to me is to do a conversion from dual-mass to single mass. To me it makes sense that an OEM clutch kit which is for dual-mass flywheel may not work with a single mass aftermarket flywheel. I had asked Acura for cost on a new dual-mass flywheel and it was around 270 CAD$.

2. I don't know what he means by "transmission is rusted out" but as you suggested the tranny is aluminum. Maybe the bolts are rusted out. I know removing the tranny requires the removal of the subframe and lots of other components, perhaps those are rusted out?

Hope this is helpful.
