04 tsx cluch prob

Hi Guys

tonight was the first time i ever herd this or felt this on the car

when pushing the clutch all the way down i here a squeaky type noise - also it kind of feels like there is some type of grinding feeling when you push the clutch all the way down

the car drives fine - it does not feel like the clutch is sliping when driving the car - just when pushing the clutch down

any ideas on whets going on

My guess is that it's the same problem that has plagued hydraulic clutches in Hondas as long as they've been making them. The way the clutch works, there is a slave cylinder operated by the pedal. The slave cylinder is mounted on the side of the transmission. When you push the pedal in, a piston pops out of the slave cylinder and pushes on the lever that engages the throw out bearing to disengage the clutch. The end of the piston that pushes on the lever is rounded and fits into a little detent on the end of the lever. The interface between the piston and the lever is where it's squeaking.

To fix it you need to pull back the rubber boot that surrounds the end of the lever and the piston. It's on the front of the transmission case by the radiator. Look for a cast metal piece with a rigid hydraulic line going into it. This is the slave cylinder. On one end you'll see sqaurish rubber boot. If you pull that back you'll see the end of the piston and the lever I'm talking about. The lever will have some free play (before the throwout bearing hits the clutch fingers). You need to put some grease on your finger and mash it down into the detent on the lever. That should quiet things down and make the clutch feel a bit smoother.

Of course this is only a guess. If you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from, it would be helpful. The next most likely culprit is the linkage on the actual pedal itself.

after about 35K miles mine used to make a squealing noise when starting off on a hill. I ended up with a good tech at the dealership, he had me take off from a start in 2nd gear and was able to hear the problem instantly. it was some sort of problem with the design. they replaced the entire clutch for me at no cost.

The release bearing is what causes this squeal. It can wear prematurely if you have the habit of pushing and holding the clutch while waiting for a light or idling. You're lucky to have everything replaced under warranty as I fought for this but Honda Canada would not cave.

good to know the reason. I thought it was not a problem to keep the clutch pressed in while at a stop? In the end I don't normally keep the clutch in while waiting, but I'll for sure keep in mind not to in the future.
