04 Failed emissions

Hello, I found this forum while searching around for the answer.

I recently noticed that my plates are about to expire and was informed I needed emissions on my TSX. I went to have it done yesterday and was told it had failed due to the NOx reading while everything else was fine.

The error code I was given is P0135. I'm not sure if the specific readings relate directly to the O2 sensor and replacing it myself would solve the problem, as I'd prefer not to take it to a mechanic. Is it a very complicated fix or something I could do with a low to moderate amount of knowledge? I've done basic repairs the car (alternator, ignition coil, etc) and was wondering if it was any more difficult than that.

I have the emissions report attached below if it helps to confirm this is the issue at all along with the charts they gave me.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

P0135 is an electrical fault for the heater circuit of the air/fuel sensor. It most likely is an internal fault in the heater element of the AF sensor, however could be a wiring fault, connector fault, or ECM/PCM fault.

It is not a difficult job, but will require elevating the car on jack stands, or get car front end up on ramps to gain access. A special O2 sensor removal tool (usually available from auto parts stores) is required to remove the AF sensor. AF sensor can be very tight and may require heating (run engine 5 mins or propane torch) to assist removal.

good luck

Thanks. So is the part in question the most likely culprit for the high NOx reading? I'm confused as to why a sensor would cause something like that, I would assume it would just inform you if there was a problem, not be the problem if that makes sense.

Sorry to double post, I didn't see an edit button if there is one.

What is the difference between these two parts? With my luck I'm assuming the second is the one I need.

My general understanding is that the second one is more advanced, but are they interchangeable or do both exist in the car? If it's only one, do I necessarily need the AF or is the standard O2 an acceptable replacement?

Thanks again for the help.

The code P0135 is specific for Air Fuel Sensor, which is upstream of the catalytic converter. You may be able to beat that price on ebay. I saw same denso for $160 w/ free shipping.

Will it cure high NOX, maybe, but high NOX can be result of other faults, EGR system principally. But you don't have any EGR codes. You can't get an emissions sticker w/o resolving the P0135.

good luck
