04 TSX A/C junk

Same problem happened here over the weekend. 2004 with 76,000 miles and I could hear a "clicking" sound from the AC while on the highway....few seconds later it sounds like a card stuck in a fan - and AC is out. I'm taking it to a local guy today and will see what he has to say....then possibly the dealer with hope they will foot the parts.

Not a safety feature, that's the way AC systems work. There must be a minimum amount of freon in the system for the AC compressor to engage at all. As the full charge leaks out over the years, you will find the compressor cycling on and off for shorter and shorter intervals until finally the compressor no longer engages. Usually adding a pound of R134a will bring the charge
back to full.

05 TSX, 94,700 Miles

Clicking sound and died

Car at dealer, I did buy extended warranty.. probably the best 1300 I spent. Considering I had a bunch of other work done at these ripoff prices. Hopefully the guy wont give me any BS about it

04 Acura TSX with 90k miles. Went out on me on Friday with nary a noise... it just stopped working.

I don't hear the relay click on like I used to (the so-called audible thump) so I'm guessing something's weird there.

Took it to Sunnyvale Acura (CA) this morning. I'll let ya'll know how it turns out.

A/C clicking

Well, it's been 3 years since my A/C was replaced and serviced. Lately, my compressor has been clicking quite loudly when the A/C is on, but the car is idle. Spoke to a local auto A/C shop, and was advised most likely it needs to be recharged. I'll post back after once it's confirmed.

Update: Just went to pick up my car from a AC shop and I need a new compressor. He's charging me $680 parts & labor which includes new compresser and new condensor w/ 12 month warranty

That's about 1/3 the cost at the dealer. Is he going to use OEM parts?

Result - 04TSX

Just what I didn't want to heard - compressor took a dive and will need a new clutch and stater....grand total with installation of $1500 + tax. I asked to have a factory rep look into this bill as it is a recurring problem and am expecting a return call this afternoon.

-04 TSX with 76,000 miles.

Hopefully Honda Client Services will help out. If not, try an independent auto A/C shop. philco got a quote for $680 parts & labor - excellent alternative compared to dealer.

Acura wouldn't do anything for me - I'm the 3rd owner apparently and I don't get any of my work done by the dealer....will go independent next....thanks.

Went to local independent auto A/C shop today. A/C system checks out okay Pressures are within spec, no leaks. Tech offered to have the freon (R134a) recharged, so I said okay. After recharge, A/C set at Lo recorded temp at 41 degrees...chilly!!! Parts & labor $114.

Got the car back from my dealer 2 days ago saying that they needed to order a part. I went in this morning to drop it off and got it back today ~3PM.

Good news is that it was covered wholly under warranty.

From what I can remember, they replaced the compressor, coil, cluth and recharged. I didn't get a copy of the itemized bill but from what I can recall, it was ~$1,100-$1,200 parts and labor. On an aside, I asked for a copy of the itemized/costed invoice and they said no. I'm waiting to hear back from the manager now.

Best $0 I ever spent on the 105k Warranty (I made them give me the best warranty they had after the 2 transmissions that busted on me!)

^As a consumer, you have a right to a receipt. Even though you didn't pay out of pocket, it's warranty work, which you paid for the extended warranty. The dealer saying 'no' to your request puts the suspicion of what are they trying to hide?

04 tsx

So I wrote a letter to Acura Client Services and they responded in about a week.....knocked $500 off the bill which puts it in line with what I got at the local shops. I'll take it to the dealer in case it takes a crap again.....

The compressor/condenser issue is not common at all on the '05 (almost all have been '04s). What is your A/C problem exactly?

Agreed - The issue they had was they had the "cost" items on there which is understandable for them to want to protect. I got a copy of the work order with the "cost" sections blanked out but the actual invoiced work in tact. All in all, it worked out.

Not guaranteed.....just a high chance.

I'm at 56k with just the relay going out, not the big compressor problem yet. I probably just jinxed myself.

man, this car has been so reliable for me and now its paid off. if i have to start with huge maintance bills that kinda defeats the purpose of keeping a car for a long time to save money.

Yea, it can be disappointing.

Every car has its ups and downs. Keep in mind it's a wear and tear item. With today's cars, there are so many features and luxury's, something(s) is bound to break down.
With that said, I frequent other forums - German, American, Japanese - and have concluded our car is more reliable than most. Our maintenance bill is less expensive than our competitors. One of many reasons why Honda/Acura has high resale value.

One more

The dealer found no fine particles in the system and said I hopefully did not need a whole new system. They would replace the clutch, solenoid and relay (with crossed finders) that will fix the problem without blowing the system. The service manager said the cost would be above 700 but I would only pay 400 and goodwill from Honda USA would cover the rest. If the system fails after replacing the parts I would be out an additional 1600 to replace the entire system (clutch and other new parts could be reused). I'll find out in two days what happens once they install the parts.

Picked up my cold TSX (111000miles) today and here is the $ info:
70% paid by me $399.62
30% paid by factory $120. 89 and two days loaner
replaced coil st, solenoid, clutch set, relay.
I'm happy the compressor did not fail lodging shrapnel throughout the system and potentially costing me much more. Assuming the compressor does not fail in the future, I'm satified with Honda USA paying for 30% of the repair since the cause was not an imploding compressor.

04 TSX 73,000 miles, just bought it too!

OMFG, I've have this car for 3 1/2 days and had AC on everyday, Since its HOT in ATL, GA. All my other cars I've owned never had AC because it was my project cars. Well to explain it.

First 3 days was fine, AC was cold like I liked it.

Today, I was just chilling in my driveway while cleaning the inside of my car. It was set AC on 72 and 2 bars... Its usually cold. Now I can hear my AC fan cut on and off is this NORMAL?

I thought when the AC is on the FAN is supposed to stay on to keep it cool.

Well I drove it around and the AC would get warm(not hot) but warm, and then a few minutes later it gets back to normal... Back and forth same thing all day today...

Then tonight I sat in the car listening to a CD I burned. AC is on, car start up and AC is cold and like after the first couple of tracks on the CD. It gets warm, and I can hear a scratch or screeching noise near the glovebox, and the Compressor is in the Engine bay. So I tried to figure it out. Sounds just like an Alternator belt. But I know its not. Because AC is going warm and cold warm and then cold.

When the fan kicks on the AC gets cold, when the AC fan cuts off the AC get warm. Its weird.

The idle is fine. doesnt want to stall out and it idles perfect at 750rpm.

Could it be my AC Relay?
AC fan switch?
Does the AC fan stay on when AC is on?

Clutch is still spinning, and Previous owner told me he just got it check out by Acura.

*note-The main AC line going to the compressor looks/feels condensated and cold. and the part that goes the compressor looks wet. doesnt look like its squirting, just wet.

If you want I can take pictures and post up tomorrow after I go to a friends Shop.

First thing im going to get tomorrow is some O-rings for the AC lines at Acura, AC relay, maybe a Fan switch, and a Full AC flush, and then Recharge.. I will keep you guys Updated thanks.

I love TSX's but damn I already had AIRBAG light issue, Steering wheel shaking issue, warped rotors, Clutch Pedal Clicking/Popping Sometimes (not all times), and now This.

and I only owned it for 3 full days!

Anyone know about the clutch pedal Popping? whats the fix on it?

^ Sorry to hear about all your issues after only 3 days. There's another long thread about your clutch problem (and lots of threads about the brakes). A quick search should bring them up for you.

2004 Acura TSX 44,560 miles complete a/c and extras for only $664.47.

I took my car to Acura after I heard a loud clicking noise going down the road the other day. I looked at the a/c compressor and a huge hole was in the side of it. I read on this forum that people had gotten help with acura client services so I figured that was my best bet seeing as I don't have extended warranty. Took car to Acura and got a loaner car, real nice 2009 Acura TSX. Told him to call me before any work was to be done and I also had door actuator needing to be replaced and bulb for middle console. He said he would try to help me out on the a/c. So he calls me couple days later and tells me the a/c is bad and the system is contaminated, but for some reason the help he mentioned before he never mentioned again. He quoted me about $3750. I was like I gotta get it fixed but that is a little pricey. He told me he would call regional manager and call me back in ten minutes. About 2 hours later with no phone call, I go back to the dealership. I complain more about a car with less than 50,000 needing complete a/c overhaul. Asked him if I was gonna have to pay this out every 50,000 miles. He said give him a day or so. Now I am worried. I got the call couple days later. He said good news. Acura is willing to pay 80% of my bill on the a/c work, and fix the door actuator for free and the bulb would be $93.00. The grand total for my bill was $664.47. If anyone would like I could post it on the invoice page. I would have never thought I could get that amount of work done for less than a grand through Acura, especially seeing how I didn't have the extended warranty. Thanks to everyone. Saved me a load of money. I told the guy at Acura that I couldn't have had that amount of work done in a local shop for that price and he agreed.

My SECOND compressor just blew up on me today.

I really don't think I'm going to drop another $2000 into it to fix it this time. I'm leaning heavily towards selling it as is.

How long did the 2nd compressor last you?

Yea, I wouldn't blame you for putting up the FOR SALE sign. I'd likely do the same thing.

I got 2 years and 1 month out of the second compressor. I'm not impressed.

I've got some traveling to do this week, but I'll take it in when I get back. Maybe it's something simple, but it sure doesn't sound good.

Dan Martin:

That is terrible. I know you are a long time poster to this board. I have several questions:

1) How many miles does your TSX have?

2) Are you the original owner of the car?

3) Do you know if the compressor part number from the parts catalog is the same for all 2004-2008 TSXs?. For example, can I buy an AC compressor for a 2008 TSX and install it on my 2005?

4) I believe I remember reading in the past that you also had problems with excessive oil burning in your TSX. Do you still have that problem?

Thanks Dan

I'm just over 100,000 miles, and yes I'm the original owner. I was informed that the compressor that was put on my car was an '07 model, but I don't know what the model number is.

The oil consumption is still an issue. I put a quart in every 1000 miles / 1500 kms. I keep a stash of oil in my trunk and put a bottle in every 3rd fill-up at the pumps.
