Painted Engine Cover, Feedback and Pictures!

Hey guys,

If you’re from Toronto you’d know this long weekend sucked at least weather wise, anyway I was bored and home since most of the day was cloudy with showers, so I decided to paint my engine cover. While removing it for cleaning a while back I managed to drop it and scrape the front of it considerably so I thought why not give it some fresh paint.

My plan of attach consisted of wet sanding it thoroughly with some 2000 grit sand paper and plenty of water, followed by masking off the i-vtec badge and then shooting it with Dupli-Color ‘Textured Metallic Coating’ in a dark gray. I wanted to go for a sleek stealthy type look, as you would get from factory.

Anyway without further due here are some pictures;

What do you guys think? should I also paint the cover with the Acura emblem on it? or would that be to much?

+1 It's 20 or 30 bucks but it doesn't have the nice finish that CGTSX05 has done.

I did this last summer/fall, the result was better than I thought (NOT as good as GTSX-05 due to my paint skill); I was looking for a CF IM cover but there's none existance, but I'm fine with my project.

certainly the best painted one I've ever seen.

you could paint others like that and sell them, no question.
very clean, all the way around. zero visible flaws from what I see.

yes, paint the spark plug cover too.

wanna paint mine?

Paint and colour is listed in my OP, and I did not use a clear-coat I just made sure to layer it about five times.

Thank you for your kind words, there are very little to no flaws that showed up after the paint applications, I am happy with the results. I might just end up painting the spark plug cover .... sure MM's I'll paint your cover anytime all you have to do is ask.

I know everyone is going to say ‘this POST is useless without pictures’ but man-o man does it shine when the sunlight is directly hitting the engine bay the sparkles really pop and the colour comes to life. At work I did not have my camera handy so I wasn’t able to capture it and when I got home the weather got crappy so I will make sure to take pictures tomorrow and post.

First and foremost, mask off the i-Vtec badge, with some painters tape and a exact cutting kinfe...

My technique consisted of wet sanding with 2000 grit automotive sand paper. Lightly glide the sand paper along the surface and let the paper itself do most of the work. Make sure to repeat until the surface is completely sanded and ready for paint…

Make sure to evenly spray from a good distance in a well ventilated area, I did about five to six coats and make sure to let it dry before re-installation, It still looks great in my engine bay, no flaking chipping or signs of distress.

Hope this helps? for any more info don’t hesitate to PM.

Thanks, I ended up just going at it since I was bored and nothing to do lol

I ended up sanding it with 300grit till it was smooth to the touch. Did 6-7 light coats, and then 3 clear coats. It came out very nice.

here's pix, but my camera phone sucks.. looks much better in person. I was thinking about wet sanding it with a maybe 3000grit to get the surface smooth, however, after putting it on, the textured look goes well with the IM
