It increases combustion chamber pressure during operation so the head, head gasket, and piston tops/rings/pins/rods/crank see higher pressures and temperatures. Not dangerous in the presence of enough fuel, and if timing is retarded to compensate for the faster burn resultant to the oxygenated fuel mixture. In the long run nitrous puts less stress on an engine than boost that generates the same power level because chamber pressure only increases during the combustion cycle, and only when the gas is actually flowing.
