That must have been one hell of a pothole. Is there any more of a story behind what happened?

Are you sure he hit a pothole? I think you probably mean he tried to dodge the pothole and went out of control so he hit a light pole.

he hit a pothole. matelot i didnt think your interpretation was quite funny since one of the kids had a broken rib, a punctured lung, and a concussion, while the other was throwing up and urinating blood.

Dude take it easy, I think people just want to know how hitting a pothole can do that much damage to a car. Honestly it looks like something else happened. I've seen lots of potholes but none that looked like they were capable of bashing in the SIDE of a car. There's got to be more to the story.

You could have said that in your intial post and probably have saved hearing so many comments. You leave yourself open when you don't break it down. Maybe you should explain more next time.

EURORTSX, who's brain juices aren't flowing? You make a vague post about damage potholes can cause, and then get pissed when people want to know more details and start guessing about what may have happened.

Damn! That's crazy! Is your friend going to file anything to the city to get reimbursed for medical expenses and damage?

Hate to burst the bubble on anybody, but you cannot bring a suit to the city cuz you hit a pothole on the road. All the city promises you they'd do is to get the streets fixed asap, nothing else.

Actually, you can, if you can demonstrate you were driving properly for the conditions and that the pothole was the direct cause of the resulting damage.

It's proving all that that is difficult and thus most people don't even bother to try.

It's possible to win a suit like that and it has been done in the past. My mom broke her elbow after tripping on a hole in a cracked sidewalk and was reimbursed for damages.

Yeah, you're actually wrong about this. Maintaining city roads is something they're required to do since part of our tax money goes to them maintaining the roads. It might take awhile to get reimbursed but if you have a description of where the pothole is, when you did it, a picture of the pothole and the damage done would really help, but that should be enough to get reimbursed.

Most cities won't even argue or try to go to court about it either. Most of the time, they give out the money since it's easier than having to deal with a court case they'll lose.

I live in New York and commute to the city and the island daily... I've hit some monster pot holes, even ones that have caused tire damage... but I'm sorry, for that kind of wreck the driver was clearly negligent in some way. Since it was a "water filled pot hole" here is what I could see going down (I'm ready for the flames)...
The driver was going at a speed unsafe for the conditions. He saw the pot hole at the last second and attempted to swerve around it. He lost control and swiped the hydrant or wall or whatever.
Pot holes bend rims and suspension parts, they don't cause safely operated motor vehicles to crash like that.

Besides, pot holes are caused by water getting in cracks and then freezing and expanding. I dare say you southern Californians have no idea what a REAL pot hole is.

i sense another one of those "there is nowhere like new york" people...the place the accident took place was a poorly designed area with no lighting at the base of a major freeway here in socal...i live about 5 minutes from the place and drive down there often...what you can see wont kill you, but what you cant see you will feel under your tires...it is an area of countless accidents

That still doesn't explain anything. WTF happened? You post up some pics and don't explain anything behind what happened. What the hell do you expect everyone to say.

"wow, must have been a pretty deep pothole to have bent the side of the car in"

First, there IS nowhere like New York... but I'll be the first to admit we don't have the worst pot holes: Detroit does. Roads in MI are a mess... still, never hit a bump there that flipped my f*ing car. The rest of your post didn't make sense to me.

two of my friends were headed up a hill at the same time. my friend with a g35 was going up the hill at 70 mph...while my friend with the rsx was going up at 50 mph. my friend with the g35 said he felt something under his tires, but traction control kicked in and he was fine. the rsx hit the pothole, hydroplaned, lost control, and spun into oncoming traffic, hit a fire hydrant and ended up smashed into a solid brick wall. if you look at that picture, just know that the front of the car was in worse condition.

Up a wet hill at 50 and 70 in wet conditions? Yea, no negligence there... Still, I don't understand how hitting a pot hole, even at high speed, causes a car to skid out of control unless there was also a curve... and if that was the case, well... traffic darwinism (although that's not true darwinism, fitness and all that, but I digress).

50 is 5 over the speed limit, not a big deal. i dont see your point in pointing out the guy going 70, since nothing happened to him. i dont see what darwinism has to do with anything in this situation unless you are trying to act smart. obviously i was not present when the accident occurred, so i can only give first-hand information from the source, so dont ask me how a mere pothole can cause that much damage

...didn't you say that you live near the scene of the accident?
i'm just suggesting that you take a picture of the actual pothole if it's still there and its surroundings so people can get a better idea of what you're trying to say.

you might want to think before you start replying
