Just something simple, reliable, and effective..... i hear that Cliffords have more reliability problems than any other brand.... and what will happen to our factory keyless remote entry? is it just a computer program or is it a physical hardware that an aftermarket car alarm will replace?

Well DEI aka Directed is the parent company and almost all of the alarms are made by them, and are branded with other names.
I have a Clifford myself and I have no complaints. The key part of getting an aftermarket alarm is the install.

Biggest thing is you need a competent installer.
Second, don't go out to Crappy Tire or Wal-Mart and buy a kit for $50. Spend good money on a Starter. I recommened:
http://www.autostart.ca/
or
http://www.compustar.org/
Then you need to make sure, for new cars with chips and immobilizers, that you buy the correct bypasskits that will retain the factory functions of the alarm and remote.
Try:
http://www.bypasskit.com/
Installer is key because there are some tricks that are not noted in the instructions books when it comes to installing. I.E. putting diodes on ceratin wires to keep from backfeeding power.
I have an Autostarter AS-2360 TW.
Honda SL (Self Lern) module.
and a HODL2 - Honda/Acura Doorlock Alarm Interface ByPassKit.
Works great, retains the factory alarm, two way paging. 2000 ft distance and retains the factory remote functions.
