What is a resonator?

I searched the boards but couldn't find a solid answer to what a resonator does and what purpose it serves. I know its a basic question, but I figured I had to ask. Thanks in advance

A hollow chamber or cavity with dimensions chosen to permit internal resonant oscillation of electromagnetic or acoustical waves of specific frequencies.
In terms of our car, there is a resonator in the intake system and one in the exhaust. Most people discuss the intake resonator. It is a big black plastic box with piping in it to change the sound of the intake system. It's pretty restrictive to airflow so that's why it is removed as a part of an aftermarket intake installation.

This was one of the first things I did when I got my car. I didn't put on an aftermarket intake, but I did remove the resonator.

:Agree:

Although the sound it yields is quite ugly.

I never tried running with the stock intake and no resonator. It would be cool if anyone could post a sound clip of this free mod.
