Short Ram Intake Questions
I'm trying to decided whether an intake is right for me. Gains in hp across the chart for about $200 seems good to me. I just have a few questions:
1. Since SRIs generally pull in warm/hot air, are there any dangers of running an intake this way that might cause overheating?
2. What is the difference between the stock box intake and an SRI?
3. Are there any noticeable differences in sounds between an SRI and a CAI?
4. At what RPM do you notice a changeover in sound on an SRI?
5. Any fears of a truck driving next to you and spashing a wave of water at you that gets under the hood - causing hydrolock?
6. Which SRI setup is better - K&N or Injen?
Thanks a lot. I've tried my best to read everything that has already been posted out there and hope I'm not asking questions that have already been asked...

1. No. But can cause loss of HP in hot weather esp. before the car is moving.
2. Less Restrictive and smoother air flow
3. SRI adds a nice very noticable sound over stock but just after 1/2 throttle or so and high rpms. I would assume CAI would sound similiar.
4. 3500+ rpms it starts to get loud and you can really hear the VTEC kick at 6000 now
5. Not really, drove in some serious rain storms in flooded roads and no issues
6. I am using AEM SRI http://www.aempower.com/
Benefits of others is its can be either CAI or SRI. Just didn't feel like installed CAI at the time since 2nd car and wife uses more.
Very happy with it so far and the like most cars it feels much better in cold weather. The sound is much louder then stock but very tolerable since its only when you really get the rpms over 3500 that it starts to get loud, so for most around the town driving it sounds stock. And even cruising at 65-70+ its quiet since the rpms are low with the gearing in the TSX.

1. No way.
2. The stock box/filter/resonator setup is extremely restrictive (you'll see when you take all the crap out). An SRI is just a pipe with as non-restrictive a filter as possible on the end.
3. SRI is a little louder (only because it's closer to your ears).
4. It's not so much RPM as throttle position. If you go past 1/2 throttle at any RPM, you'll hear the sound difference.
5. Nope. That water would just hit your fender and roll off. It's even less of an issue if you're in SRI mode.
6. The differences would be smaller comparing SRIs than CAIs. And they're probably about the same performance-wise (although I haven't seen a K&N dyno). Assuming they are, get the one you think looks better or you can get cheaper..
Your fuel efficiency will decrease in city driving. It will increase on the highway.

My fuel economy has stayed the same... I get 27-28 mpg mixed driving. It might go down due to a heavier throttle foot and higher rpms because it does sound so sweet... but if you drive normal mileage is not effected.

Anyone who tried both SRI and CAI on their TSX: did you notice a sound difference? I'm getting annoyed of the sound that my SRI does (my friend's CAI sounds quieter and not annoying). Maybe the fact that I also have a header and a RT cat plays a role?
Thanks!

I ran it in CAI from Nov06 to Nov07, and swapped it to SRI for the winter as an experiment. Initial impression was that SRI (to me) was a lot louder, since I guess the air filter is closer to the cabin. I get more in-cabin vibration under WOT with the SRI than I did with CAI. Power wise I did seem to notice quicker throttle response with SRI but that could easily be placebo effect.
CAI seems to pull better on the highway, and I like the sound of it more. I'll probably be going back to CAI for the hotter months simply to avoid heatsoak, if nothing else.

1. No! Here in New York City, during the winter I run SRI and in the summer I will run CAI.
2. Better Air Flow and less peices that the air flow travels through reducing enigne lag.
3. SRI is a lot louder in the cabin since the filter is on the top area of the engine bay. CAI is still loud but less than SRI since near bottom of wheel well
4. At top rpm's within the first 4 gears if in SS mode AT.
5. None for SRI. For CAI get hydroshield.
6. Biased response: Injen b/c I have it?

1 Recommendation for the Apexi SRI!! Got it over the summer from one of the vendors here... HeelToe - sounds great! There is a step by step install post on here as well!

Slickrab...i live over the bridge in New Jersey. It is constantly raining in the summers. Isnt having a CAI a danger? Why is it dangerous in the winter to have CAI, but not dangerous in the summer?
