Rank your Mods

I'm trying to get together a thread on what everyone's favorite modifications are to their own TSX, to get an idea what makes the most difference to you.

Please rank your modifications, from 1 to 5, one being the mod that you like the most or makes the most difference in performance, aesthetics, etc. This might be good for noobs who are about to start modding, to give them a place to start.

As for me, I haven't done much to my car, so my list is short:

1. Comptech Icebox - increases responsiveness, not sure power changes a whole lot. Sounds marvelous, much more open and bassy than stock. Head turning in a parking structure, tunnel, etc.
2. M3 Lip Spoiler - subtle aesthetic change. No performance change of course.

Moderators, if this is a repost, please feel free to close this. However, I think it might be good to start something new like this, since any old thread might have old info, and those with mods from 04 and 05s have lived with them for awhile and can give us a better impression.

1. Jtso
2. CG2004TSX
3. Dan

err... wrong mods, sorry

1. RSB, inexpensive and impacts the car every time you drive
2. CAI intake, makes it more fun to drive the car when it roars
3. Short Shifter, you feel it every time you change gears, feels much sportier
4. OEM kit, relatively inexpensive for what you get, comes painted perfectly from the factory
5. Hondata

1) Tein Basics Coilovers = Dramatically turns an Acura Sedan into the look of a Luxury Sports Sedan that has a look of a BMW 3 Series or an Audi A4 Wheel Gap.

2) LED Conversion = e.i. White LED's for the License Plate bulb Looks similar to the Lexus lights

3) Hondata ECU reflash = Extra Punch in the higher RPM's

4) Progress RSB = Inexpensive but instant handling improvement

5) M3 Lip Spoiler = Inexpensive but subtle aesthetic improvement

All these mods I feel Improve the TSX into more Euro Styling similar to BMW or Audi

1. RSB. Best bang for your buck
2. Apexi SRI with custom airbox. Noticeable power increase AFTER making the airbox. Sounds great too.
3. RSX-S gearknob. Stock AUDM Accord Euros come with a shitty leather-wrapped PLASTIC knob which flexed when shifting. I'd always get a grind into 2nd because the shifts were not precise. No problem with the RSX-S aluminium knob.
4. Cusco Strut bar. Best bling for your buck.
5. Cusco Underbrace. No one knows you have it, but you are proud to have something that many people would go "HUH?????" when you mention it.

1. RSX-S 2nd gear
2. RSX-S 3rd gear
3. RSX-S 4th gear
4. RSX-S 5th gear

Seriously...

1. Gear swaps - the k24A2 comes alive with closer gears. Additionally, the dreaded "2nd gear grind" is a thing of the past with the post-TSB (RSX 05/06) gear designs.
2. Comptech header - although adding it after reflash and CAI probably maximized it, the butt dyno says it added the most power
3. Aspec suspension - minimized roll and brake dive
4. Injen CAI - better midrange power and great sound

2. Comptech header - although adding it after reflash and CAI probably maximized it, the butt dyno says it added the most power

1. OEM body kit w/ wing spoiler – TSX has great lines, better lines with a body kit.
2. Aftermarket rims – To improve its luxury/sport car looks
3. 3M window tint, 3M clear bra on front, headlights and fogs – protect the luxury appearance for years to come
4. Metal trim kit/Acura racing pedals – dress up the already best in class interior
5. All weather floor mats/350Z cargo net/trunk tray – Still need to take the kid to soccer practice/games.
6. Performance/suspension mods will come later.

1. Progress RSB
2. Hondata (barely #2 behind RSB, which does so much for so little)
3. Comptech Icebox
4. Topspeed Header
5. RT Cat

All others fall below, and I'm not even considering my many a/v mods.

I have to break them down to different categories as many are equally effective.

Engine:
1. Hondata reflash - This is how the factory ECU programming should be.
1. DC header - Low cost performance. Pay attention to the flex pipe.
1. UR underdrive pulleys - Faster reving engine rpm. Nice gain throughout the rpm range.
1. Metal CAT - One of the best high flow CATs available. No CEL.
2. Big bore TB - Nice hp gain throughout the entire rpm range.
2. K&N intake - Excellent quality and mounting hardware. Little or no low-end loss.
3. Oil catch can - Very effective in collecting oil in the PCV system.
3. Tanabe MT exhaust - One of the quietest catbacks on the market. It does get louder after awhile.
4. Hondata heat shield gasket - Keeps the intake manifold cooler.
4. Intake manifold gasket - Works with the Hondata gasket to further reduce intake temp.
4. TB coolant bypass - Low cost mod to reduce intake air temp.
5. Optima red top battery - Higher output
5. Ceramic coated intake manifold - Helps to reduce intake air temp.

Transmission:
1. Custom shift knob - Larger and heavier to make shifting smoother.
1. Neuspeed short shifter - Reduces shift throw
2. GM synchromesh MTL - Improves shifting especially high rpm 1st to 2nd gear.
3. Metal shifter cable bushings - Removes slacks from the shifter housing.
3. Metal shifter housing bushings - Removes slacks from the shifter linkage

Suspension:
1. Tein Flex coilovers - Firm but comfortable ride. Height adjustment without affecting spring preload. 16 steps damper adjustments.
2. Progress RSB with poly bushings - Most compatible RSB with aftermarket exhaust systems.
2. Custom engine torque damper - Reduces or eliminates wheel hops.
2. Ingalls rear camber kit - Allows camber and toe adjustment.
3. Comptech upper strut tower bar - The only strut bar that utilizes all OEM accessory mountings (fuse box, APS, foglight relay. Etc.)
4. Cusco type 2 lower brace - Looks good and provides addition lower chasiss support. Can also be used as handle bar when sliding back and forth under the car on a creeper.

Wheels & Tires:
1. Michelin PS2 - Light weight and sticky.
1. SSR GT2 - Light weight.

Brakes:
1. Hawks ceramic pads - Very low dust and excellent street performance.
2. Goodridge SS lines - Helps distribute brake pressure to where it should be without flexing.

Exterior:
1. OEM body kit - Looks good and pre-painted from the factory.
2. Rear lip spoiler - Looks okay and cheap.

Jtso,

What is the Metal Cat? Is that another high flow cat, better than Random Tech?

More info here... http://www.metalcat.com.au

There isn't any bolt-on Metal' CAT available for the TSX. It has to be custom made.

If you have a 5AT, what mods would/could you do to your transmission? Is it possible to do the same mods at a 6MT?

Not a whole lot you can do to the AT. You can add an aftermarket transmission cooler to keep the ATF from over heating during heavy usage.

8. black-taped window trim - love the way it looks, will get the trim painted somehow ($30)

Just to update my list:

1. Comptech Header - Talk about freeing up the engine. It revs quicker and there is more torque at every point in the powerband. The part itself has a nice finish and welds are nice. Much lighter than stock. Its a great mod, easy to self-install.
2. Comptech RSB - Noticably reduces body roll. Makes it a bit easier to induce a slide with my balding tires though. I would like to couple this with a strut bar. Easy to self-install as well.
3. Comptech Icebox
4. m3 lip spoiler - Mad downforce at 1,000 mph.

With these items, my TSX feels like a sharper version of itself even if it still looks stock on the outside. I'm looking forward to throwing on the A-spec suspension that I have sitting in my garage, and some lightweight (< 15 lbs.) wheels.

What's the difference between the two gaskets?
Are they put on top of each other to make the gasket thicker?

The Hondata gasket goes between the injector base and cylinder head. The intake gasket goes between the intake manifold and injector base.

JTso, this may be a silly question, but which helped more for performance the DC headers or the Underdrive Pulleys, they bought cost around the same, but my friend told me "headers are illegal"? :/

And if I took it to a body shop would they cost more to change headers or pulleys?

Aftermarket headers are not illegal. You can find racing headers that are illegal for the street but both DC Sports and Comptech make headers for street use. If you live in California then you should also know that both DC Sports and Comptech have TSX compatible headers that are CARB certified. The header swap should run you around $100-$140 in labor but if you're mechanically inclined then you can do it yourself (there are DYI threads on swaping the header). I don't recall what the labor cost is for the pulleys.

A shop should be able to install them at a reasonable rate.

Oh thanks Mr Bonds that clears it up. But that still leaves me with the question of either new pulleyes or headers :/. They both run at the same cost, but which do you actually feel more of a difference or would you rather replace as a first change for engine wise.

Anyone know the labor cost of pulleys?.

I'm not sure about the labor cost, but I have heard the UR pulleys do wonders for your car considering the price and relatively uninvasivness of the install. I don't have either, but from others advice, I would definitely go with the pulleys, hands down.

Based on what I've read, you will feel the benefits of the pulleys throughout the rev range, but particularly in the low rpms where your car will feel like it can spool up faster (there is less rotational mass to overcome). The header will prove its worth at higher rpms when there is more airflow exiting the exhaust manifold more efficiently. It may depend on the type of benefits you are looking for. A quicker jump off the line and a quicker move to the next lane over or more power when you're flat out on the high cam between 6K-7300 rpm.

LoL, probably not too often. I'm just trying to illustrate where you'll derive the most benefit from an aftermarket header.
