random cat or test pipe?

right now i got injen intake, DC header, fujitsubo exhaust
and am planning to get a test pipe.
for those with random cat, how's the sound and performance?
would it be better to get a test pipe instead or
is it the same?

I don't believe anyone here has used a test pipe yet. You probably better off with a high flow cat instead.

The CEL is easily bypassable using spark plug non-foulers over the O2 sensor.

High flow cats are not the same. Magnaflow (Carsound) is 300 cell, Random and Metal' are 200 cell cats. Each can have different flow rates.

Can you explain cell #s and flow rates briefly for the uninformed please, and their implications in our application.

The cell #s are measured in how many cell per square inch of the cat core. The bigger the cell the less cell per square inch, thus flows better.

Here is a Metal' cat core...

The flow rate is measured by comparing the inlet flow in cfm and the outlet cfm with a given dia pipe. A good high flow cat should have low % drop in cfm through the cat core.

According to my dyno, the 200 cell cat gained ~4.5 hp and 5 tq over the 300 cell cat on the same car.

http://www.randomtechnology.com/contact.html is a list of dealers for the Random Tech High Flow Cat. I read somewhere there is another TSX owner that has one. It is a direct bolt on and is designed specifically for TSX.

My question is anyone here have a RT Cat? how much louders does it make your car and how much power did you gain? any Cons about it?

Yeah, that way the cops will have a great time driving your higher-horsepower car after they confiscate it.

A bit confused....the higher # of cells the better flow...

so shouldnt it be that the 300 cell car gained a bit more than the 200 cell cat??
Or is my english comprehension that bad i cant understand what jtso wrote....

If the size of the cells are bigger, it takes less cells to occupy one square inch. OTOH, the smaller the cells, the more cells will fit in the same square inch space.

Larger cells = lower #'s (200 cell cat) = flow better
Smaller cells = higher #'s (300 cell cat)

Btw, just for comparison, the stock cat is about 400 cells.

There are a bunch of us here with it and in many different configurations. I have it with a Comptech Header and Cat back exhaust. HELL YES it is louder, but it isn't a bad thing either.

I definitely felt low end torque improve. Only cons I've noticed (from other forum folks) is the possibility of a CEL (check engine light) or not passing emissions. In Ohio, we don't have emissions tests anymore as of this year, so no biggy for me.

I just got a DC header(not install yet) and I already have a CT icebox but I am not planning to put exhaust on since I am not interested to make my car loud and I have the impression that the exhaust is too much money for too little gain. So should I get the Hi-Flow cat?

The high flow cat will help even with stock exhaust as the main bottle neck is the header and cat.

I noticed nothing with the CT exhaust, but the header and cat switch was very noticeable.

This entire thread gets a:

Anyway, yes, it bolts right up. You need to get 2 gaskets from NAPA to insure you get a good seal between the cat and the post-cat side of the exhaust. There is already a ring seal between the header and cat.
