IPS Cams
I just drove to LA from the Bay Area this morning and dropped of the car at IPS. It's getting custom header, exhaust, cams, & hondata tune. Should have the car back within a month or so. Hopefully I'll update you as I get more information.

They have a bunch of cams that they are developing too. S2k's are coming out soon.

I'm not sure which cams they are going to stick in. But probably the K2's. Not enough upgrades to make use of the K10, or KMe's. IPS makes the cams. They have a lot of development on the K series motors. Even developing a Intake Manifold that makes more power than ITB's.

Thanks for taking one for the team.
It looks like a lot of RSX folks have been dissapointed with Hytech's response when releasing new products to the market. Many of them are referring to IPS as the way to go.
What year is your TSX?

What is HP/TQ gain approximately w/ Cams if there's a proper tuning. Beside performance gains, I did read that aftermarket cams does improve on the performance side, but will lower the drivability, which is rougher @ Idle and need more maintenance, not sure if it's true tho.

We'll see.... I'm not going to predict any numbers. I'll just show dyno charts. It shouldn't lower driveablility. Reliability and maintenance should be similar to stock if not different at all.

Heh... yeah I hope so too... I have faith in Ron at IPS though. I hope I get the car back earlier than a month. I have a trackday on Sept 15th. I'd love to try the car out then. In the meantime I'm driving the Elise around.

Q: What is the maximum VTC intake cam advance we can run with IPS-K2's? Are there any interference issues to be aware of in a stock K20A(2)?
A: There is no valve-valve, or piston-valve interference with IPS-K2's installed in a stock K20A(2).
Intake Valve to Piston Clearance:
* 30 degrees - .190"
* 40 degrees - .098"
* 50 degrees - .045"
Exhaust Valve to Piston Clearance: 0.180"
Valve to Valve Clearance @ 50 degrees - .067"
Q: Do we have to tune these cams from scratch, or will you be providing base maps? What tuning advice can you give us?
A: Hondata has developed four distinct IPS-K2 calibrations for the K-Pro:
* k20a2-rsx-ips-k2.kal
* k20a2-rsx-ips-k2-coldair.kal
* k20a2-rsx-ips-k2-header.kal
* k20a2-rsx-ips-k2-header-cai.kal
IPS-K2 suggested tuning notes should be followed:
* Idle best from 1000-1200 rpm
* VTEC around 5800 rpm with stock exhaust, 5550 rpm with header and exhaust
* recommended 28-30 degs ignition timing at full load
* CAI (+8 hp), exhaust (+15 hp) recommended.
* PRC manifold optional (+6 hp top end & surprising midrange gains)
* max (safe) cam advance 45 degrees
Recommended cam advance profile for the low cam:
* up to 2500 rpm 40 degs
* 2750-3500 rpm 35 degs
* 4000 rpm 30 degs
* 4500+ rpm 25 degs
Recommended cam advance profile for the high cam:
* up to 6750 rpm 40 degs
* 7000-8000 rpm 30 degs
* 8500+ rpm 20 degs
* Recommended 25 degs cam advance at cruise
These cams are very sensitive to ignition advance at low rpm and medium-high throttle. The stock ignition timing is too low in these areas and the ignition timing should be advanced in these areas for best performance.
* it is recommended to disable cold start ignition timing retard
* it is recommended to reduce or disable throttle tip in ignition timing retard
(Future Hondata K-manager enhancement, coming soon.)
* maximum injector duty cycle approx 96%
* reduce cranking fuel 10-20% for best starting

I'm not sure. I'll let you know as things progress. IPS has built 4 very fast drag cars which hold records. It's all on the right side of the website. I'm asking him about the VTC situation. We'll see.

cool. i emailed ips a looooooooooooooooooooooooong time ago and said that they had no intentions of doin a tsx app.
they said they wouldn't work on cams unless hondata kpro was released, and as we all know by now, no kpro for no tsx
doesn't matter. w/ hondta, i/h/e high flow cat and img, a tsx is a respectable car.
trust me

Anyone want to place any bets who gets their product(s) released to the TSX market first? IPS or Hytech??
At first, I thought it was a major breakthrough with Shaang's impressive results with the Hytech full exhaust + reflash. However, just like instances in the past, Hytech is reminding us that their core competancy is NOT production exhausts/cookie cutter applications. Their main focus seems to be on R&D and custom applications. Unfortunately, even the "enthusiast" drivers like myself aren't willing to part with their daily driver for 2-3 months. Those types are on a different planet and I could only dub them as "hard core" types.
Either way, it's people like Shaang and usurbrain that lead the way in the mod community when they're willing to take one for team.

Hytech's "custom" full exhaust setup can be had from any Hytech authorized dealer for about $3k according to my guy, and you don't have to wait nearly that long. They order it, then weld it up in a day or so with your car. I do know that it is a custom header (that looks an awful lot like the Comptech header), a custom fab Metal' cat (ala what JTso did), and a welded up exhaust. To my surprise, the owner of a local performance shop I went to has this setup on a TSX and is an authorized dealer, and tried to sell me on it. Sadly, I'm not that rich.
He also claimed (but had no proof ) that it put out 220 to the wheels with the reflash. I called BS on that one and he couldn't back it up, even though they have a dyno at their other facility.

The cat is a renault cat [should be, unless John changed it]
So thats where the other HyTech "prototype" system went to. John did mention it went to some shop in VA
What you saw won't be the production exhaust. Not sure if you heard it or not, the production ones will be quiter.

Yep, Currys of Chantilly guy was telling me all about it.
TSX2345- how do you know about it? know the hytech guys?
edit: its my understanding that the renault cat IS a Metal cat.

There is alittle bit of a wait time. Although I could have had one sooner, it would have been identical to what you saw and what shaang currently has, but that was rather loud for my taste. So I decided to wait it out for the quiter version, which should hopefully be anytime now, so I'm told

John won't need anyone's car anymore. He has all required measurements to build these. shaang's car was used for this, as he has the prototype design system now, and awaiting for the quieter version

You'd probably also want to PM shaang and let him as well, as he will be the first to receive the quieter version. He could also then relay/remind John that there is a buyer for the prototype system.
