How many of you actually eased through the "break-in" period?

in the manual, it says the break-in period is 600 miles... that seems kinda short for break-in period. how many of you actually followed the manual? should I follow the manual and not rev my baby T too high before 600miles? and does that also mean after 600miles on the odometer, it is totally safe for me to rev it all the way up to redline? let me know how y'all think.

You can search for more about the break-in period. There's some contention about whether you should try to span the range of revs or just go easy. Or uh, span the range of revs within the "go easy" range... oy...

I also heard from my dealer that you're supposed to stay under 75 MPH. For 600 miles!? Pfft.

yea, totally that's what my dealer told me, that's why i've been racing my tsx and max'd out at 60mph... *&#$(*&@#$ I look like a friggin gramma on the freeway even though i'm itching to rev it all the way up right now.... i'm also afraid that it'll do damage to the engine... so damn, what to do....

it's in the manual, not over 60 mph before 600 miles. i'm in canada. so far my Max speed is 80km/h usually 70km/h,and did't go over 3000rpm. i still have little over 100 km break-in to go.. but i will keep doing break-in drive style for 500km more after the 1000kms/600miles break-in period. More careful is always good.

Hey where did you see that TSXER.CA? I found the section on the manual to be very brief...basically it just said do not have any full throttle accelerations from a stop and to not change the engine oil before the first scheduled oil change. There was nothing about limiting my speed. The salesguy said the same thing. No worries about staying under 80KM/H or whatever, also said it did not matter if I used Cruise or not.

So where did you see this in the manual?

try this: not going above 3000RPM, and accelerate slowly for the first 3000 miles. yes...3000 miles. talk about waiting forever.

just remember...you really don't want to screw with your engine...there's a reason for the break in period. i'd still do one even if a car manual says that it doesn't require one.

Using the cruise would really work against the "vary the revs" advice since it holds the engine speed far better than your foot could. Especially with DBW.

The break in procedure is on p.184.

after reading a post on here about how my car was beat on during a test drive, I didn't go too easy through the break in.

wow.... drive it soft said dealership... drive is hard says the post..... who the hell should i trust?!

and like what that Mototune article said... to OPEN THROTTLE all the way, to accelerate and decelerate in short bursts seems kinda insane.... what do you guys think? I've been driving my TSX like i'm babying a newborn... never exceeded my rpm over 3000, and never exceeded 60mph.... this article totally objects to easy break-ins.... if it is true... looks like i'm gon be blasting it like mad in the coming few days... let me know what y'all think

My experience after owning many new cars and being the sales manager at a Subaru dealership for 10 years (it was a while ago) is that it does not make a darn bit of difference how you drive your new car. We had demos that were beat on during test drives and then eventually sold (at a substantial discount) and they would come back with 100k on them for trade with no engine troubles. OK, I take it a little easy the first hundred miles or so, but after that I drive it the way I want. The brakes are a different matter, I am easy on them for a week or so so that the pads get bedded in properly before doing any full on stops

This is important. Being too hard on brakes during break in can lead to bad things.

Hey no worries tsxer.ca......I don't disagree with your comments at all. It's always better to be more careful. I was just concerned because it sounded like the advice to not drive above a certain speed or rev it above a certain level was in the manual and it's not...at least I have not seen any mention of it.

Honestly I don't think it makes a difference either way.

With that said I still drive it nice during the break in period. I've also read the method posted above which is pretty much the exact opposite and I don't personally agree with it.

hey nick250,

i've had my 92 subaru legacy L for like what.... 12 years now... and that boxer engine only has 135hp... and it runs like a madman.... the pure power from a subaru is just incredible even the models from 10 years ago. I do not feel a big difference between my old subaru and my new tsx when it comes to acceleration, other things such as handling, the tsx has the subaru stumped. that's why i've always been impressed by the WRX 227hp 0-60 in 5.6 seconds realistically...

I'm sure this must have been discussed before, and everyone's got their own opinion on what to believe and what not to. Here's mine.
- I keep below 4k and don't accelerate hard
- I don't think speed matters, as long as RPM isn't too high
- I believe the brakes are highly sensitive; don't squeeze too hard
- I won't change the oil until scheduled to; I think it's a special oil and I'll let it do the job it was designed for
- I'm at just over 5k now so I think I'm safe... I don't drive it hard too often anyway.

I've seen that article about breaking it in hard, but I'm sure breaking it in soft as the manuals have always said can't be a bad thing, so I'll play it "safe".

Check this post for an excellent discussion on breaking-in your new car.

http://www.acura-tsx.com/forums/show...&threadid=1443

I read the post before I bought my TSX and have been following it to the letter since. The only difference is that I don't plan on changing the oil until 5K mi. per the manual. So far, nothing but good results. Just rolled over 1K and, in the words of Tony Bruno, "BEAUTIFUL!"

When I picked mine up, I drove it at different speeds around the suburbs, did a little driving on the highway and did a couple hundred miles in the first weekend with it (Mostly showing people the car!) The following weekend I took it down to Champaign (where I went to college - GO ILLINI!) to visit an old roomate and drove it at 80MPH for 129 miles there and then back...no troubles. I accelerated gently and braked gently, altough rarely am I ever rough on my cars. I should add that I am itching to get back there in a couple weeks to take it out in the fields of Central Illinois and see what she'll do, I have over 1500 miles now. We took my friend's RSX Type S out there last year and got her up to 145...and she wasn't quite done!!!
