Has anyone changed their D2S Bulbs?

Has anyone changed their bulbs to a different temp? I really like the the Audi/BMW HID lights but I am not sure what temp they are. I was looking on ebay and did a search for Philips D2S and it seems they only make 4300K bulb. Im sure that BMW/Mercedes/Audi does not use the cheap bulbs that are being advertised as 10000/12000K bulbs.

Does anyone have recomendations about which bulb (brand) and temperature to purchase in order to achieve that blue/purple tint while maintaining the white beam?

if you go higher, you will loose light output. honestly our TSX looks fine the way it is. if you want go for the philips 6000k ultinon. expensive but the best for color and light output.

Hey, I have a pair of those as well as an 8000K H11 kit for the OEM fogs. They are so bright powered up on my workbench that I doubt visibility will be adversely affected very much if at all.

So what I'd like to know is if you feel the blueish color is significantly worse for nighttime driving or as good as the OEM 4300K bulbs. They do LOOK awesome, however, especially with an ABP paint job.

A complete HID kit with bulbs, ballasts, and igniters should cost you no more than $400, or slightly more if you get those funky purple 13000K bulbs with it. :ghey:

A set of D2S/D2R bulbs alone should run from $180-200 or so.

I DID I DID........... I have 6500K Bulbs, you do lose lumens but its alot better for your eyes ( in my opinion). And you really stand out on the freeway, Highway Patrol seems to love my bulbs Just point them down 1 or 2 notches and you will have a greater light concentration ahead of you, slightly solving t he lumens problem. But not too much because you will loose long range bearing. But honestly when I drive next to Stock TSXs and even Audi/BMWs etc my bulbs are just as good as thiers...I`m sure not blind on the Freeway. O yea My beam is hyper white looks like the White LED color.

COuld some one be kind enough to scan their owner's manual where it shows how the change the low beam (HID) bulbs and email it to me orange_guy@yahoo.com , as I don't have an owner's manual. As my car is out of Japan and it made no sense trying to read it as it is in Japanese, so it is somewhere I don't know.

Thanks
Chris

I changed mine with PIAA Super Cobalt Blue 6600k HID Replacement. PIAA bulbs are little more bluer with a hint of purple tint. Now it looks close to one of those European HIDs.

Does it even say how to do the HIDs in the owner's manual? I thought they only told you how to do the H1 halogens for the high beam. Us regular guys apparently can't be trusted to swap out the D2S Xenons.

Yea they are freaking expensive for a pair of bulbs. But I got them for 50% off so it wasn't that bad for a quality replacement bulbs. Also this was like 1.5 years ago when these bulbs were more expensive, so $250 was more reasonable compared to today where you can grab one for less than a $100.

I'm curious to see pics to judge how the PIAAs compare to stock. Coming from halogen, the HID lights on the TSX already look pretty blue/purple to me.

I was planning to get a pair of D2S 8000K~ 10000K bulb. However, when I look under the hood today, I found that the Low beam HID system is nothing like other Highbeam or Foglight bulb insert. There's a big box behind the D2S bulb location. Do I have to take off the Headlight Unit (or remove bumper) to open up the box??? I have a Injen CAI right behide it (going downwards) and it blocks the way to move out the "box.

6000K = extreme white
6500K = extreme white w/ violet tint
8500K = extreme blue

Different companies use different Kelvin ratings though; some say 12000K but it's more marketing than anything. Also, the higher the Kelvin the less lumen (or light (brightness)) 6000K will be the brightest. Stock HID's are 4300K. If you need some HID upgrade bulbs or HID kits look here:

i wouldn't do anything over 7000k. higher kelvins will reduce its brightness.

no, they are not as bright as stocks...Guys, 4300K bulbs that we have stock are the brightest HID bulbs you can buy. Not 6000K or 8000K or whatever. People think that because the color temp is higher, the light is brigher. Actually this is not true. The purple/blue hue you see in stock HIDs is where the cutoff hits your retina, and you see the color displacement of the light. I had some wanker at the rice store tell me the kit in his civic was better and brighter than mine and tht I should "upgrade" to 10K. he thought that because it glared all over the place they were bright.

i already know that. that's what i've been saying whole time. higher kelvin rates reduces its brightness, but my piaas are slightly brighter than OEM bulbs.

How to change your D2S bulbs (I just moved mine to new housings):

From the back of the headlight, unscrew the large grey-ish cap. 04/05 it had a torx screw at the top keeping it closed, but on my 06 it didn't.

Unplug the bulb from the balast and the grounding wire.

Pinch both sides of the metal clip downwards, then outwards and flip it up and over the bulb to allow the bulb to clear. This piece actually keeps the bulb in place.

CAREFULLY, and WITHOUT TOUCHING THE BULB, remove it and move it to its new home.

Reverse and repeat to install. Sorry no pictures but it really is self-obvious once you get that cap opened.

You may have bumped the housings loose if you've lost the sharp line. They are screwed in in 3 places, and my experience with my oem 06 ones was they weren't fitted in there that much, I was easily able to remove the shield, and with a little force, the whole projector. To regain all of that, you may have to remove the headlight and re-tighten everything from the back.

So yeah, they only have instructions on replacing the high beam halogen bulbs, not the D2s. My driver side bulb burnt out so I wanna replace it but Im honestly a little scared at the warning about the high voltage and how it can kill me. I wanna do it right.

The summary is, by adding a rubber band washer between the hid lense and housing, you change the focus. By losing the sharp focus of our cutoff line, you get an elongated blue smear cutoff line instead of the stock sharp one. IMO, its a horrible idea.
