Which is faster? 5AT or 6MT?

I've heard conflicting reports about which is faster... the 5AT or the 6MT? Anyone have any independent data on this subject?

The 6MT is geared for performance, the 5AT is geared more for fuel economy.

Who's got the 0-60 numbers?

that's a no doubter. The MT has more aggresive gearing, less driveline loss and a lower curb weight. I bought an AT..but not becuase it was faster.

I was asking the dealer that very question when i test drove it. He told me the AT was slightly faster then the MT. Whether this is true or not is another question, so like he said, where are those 0-60 times.

Check the scoreboard, fellas... *points to gear ratio chart*

Auto Manual
2.652 3.267 1st
1.517 1.880 2nd
1.082 1.355 3rd
0.773 1.028 4th
0.566 0.825 5th
------ 0.659 6th

Shorter (numerically higher) gears mean more torque at the wheels (i.e. it's easier for the car to move itself). Also notice that all 6 gears on the manual are "inside" of the AT's 5th gear. That means there's much less RPM falloff in every shift. On top of that MTs are more mechanically efficient. Plus the MT weighs less. There you have it.

I only wish we got the same gear ratio as the rsx type-s. Seems to be much more aggressive.

Oh yeah, the final drive ratio is also shorter (numerically higher) in the manual (4.76 vs 4.44). This means that the differences in gear ratios are amplified a little bit more in each and every gear. If anyone else tells you that the auto is faster, slap them in the face. Thanks. :P

I was told this as well....at two dealerships. I wonder where they are getting this information and if it is public.

You guys. The dealer has 5AT in inventory, and no 6MT's. Don't believe that shit.

Granted, you have to be able to shift fairly quickly with the MT to get the good acceleration out of it. If you can't, you'll be beat by an AT anyway.

The purpose of a dealership is to sell cars. Maybe they had too many autos on the lot or something. Or they just don't know what they're talking about. Read my two posts above. They should convince you otherwise. Now go back and slap them, please.

The 6MT is definitely gonna be a little faster. If you suck at driving a stick you'll suffer with the 6MT though. It's a surgical instrument as Acura say's. If you don't have a license to practice surgery get the 5AT. It's geared aggressively although not as much as the 6MT. If you chop the throttle in 5th it slows the f__k down. If it was geared higher I think it could go 150 easy. Who goes 150 anyway? I'm ecstatic with the car as is and I'm not gonna be greedy. At least not for 36 months.

And furthermore...I know Acura estimates on auto vs. manual sales were heavily biased towards the 5AT. Therefore your gonna see more autos than 6MT's on the lot.

Talking

I just got a 6MT Carbon Gray/Quartz last night!!! Before that I have been doing a lot of research online and here's some 0-60 numbers:

http://www.caranddriver.com/article....&page_number=3

So C&D says 7.2 but in the July 2003 Motor Trend article

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/sedan/112_0307_30k/

MT says 7.9 for the 6MT??? 0.7 seconds is a huge gap so the guys at MT drive like my grandma???

Don't know the numbers for AT tho...

Great! You're only the fifth person on here to get that combination (to my knowledge). The others are Wiz, ilsmithnc, LeMasseHammer, and me. Welcome to the CG/QZ/6MT/Non-Navi club!

Man, it's a shame how uninformed alot of these salesman out there are. I don't know how somebody can take pride in the product they sell without knowing it thoroughly. I've even encountered salesman who don't even know the horsepower ratings on the car they were trying to sell me. Damn shame.

Unhappy

Yeah, the sad fact of the matter is that selling cars is just another RETAIL job. 9 out of 10 car salesmen (and women) don't know jack about the product they are selling. I used to work in a shoe store when I was in high school and people would ask me RIDICULOUS questions about shoes. Crap like, "What's a good running shoe?" or "Do you think my kid will grow out of these in a year?" I was like, "How the heck should I know? I'm just some 17 year old kid making minimum!" When you shop for shoes you don't expect the person in the store to b a shoe expert, but when people shop for cars they expect the sales person to know their stuff. What a joke! It's just retail!

Anyway, if you are a true gearhead you should be able to walk on to any car lot and ASTOUND the dealer with your knowledge of the car, wether it's a Dodge Ram or a VW Passat.

I resent that. Not only is it a very poor assumption and a strongly opinionated statement, but I happen to take pride in not only knowing my product, but many other manufacturer's product at the same time. Most of our staff also has this position when it comes to product knowledge of our cars. I may be a rare case when it comes to people that study all of the cars out there to a heavy extent, but I feel that it's my job to offer this information that I have to a potential customer. If I'm getting payed to be here, I might as well have an abundance of knowledge so that I may better inform a person about the decision they are planning to make. You have to better watch what you're saying when you're on a board like this. You may have an opinion that you feel has its place being stated, but some may feel quite the contrary. I'm not going to be the only one that flames away for comments like your's.

While I disagree that car selling is just like any other retail job (like selling shoes or vacuum cleaners or whatever) I must agree that a majority of car salespeople do not know their product as well as the average informed internet shopper.

While shopping for a new car, more than half of the salesmen I talked to did not know their product, and some even ignorantly misrepresented it (or made false claims about its competition).

A small number of salesmen were honest with me about their lack of knowledge, but were "more than happy to find out for me". It was these salesmen whom I respected. I appreciate a salesman who acknowledges he's clueless about the product (either because he's new to car sales or because he hasn't been fully trained on the newest model yet), but is eager to learn, even so much as learning from a well-informed gearhead-type buyer!

Anyway, I'm sure you do a very diligent job of knowing your product (and I hope it makes you a more successful salesman!), but the same cannot be said of the majority of car salespeople I've encountered.

Hey, I didn't say ALL car salesmen didn't know their product, I said 9 out of 10 don't. Now as far as selling cars being a retail job... well it SHOULDN'T be considered one, but the 9 out of 10 salesmen treat it as one.

I guarantee I can run a 5AT faster than that, not to mention a 6MT. So someone loan me their car's and I'll get to work.

Where did you get these numbers for the Auto?? I have every issue where a TSX was tested and there's nothing about the Auto 0-60 or 1/4 mile times. Are you guesstimating??

Yes, i'm guesstimating for the auto...For the auto numbers, based on:

Based on that information, I just added 0.5 seconds to the actual manual numbers from MotorTrend and Car&Driver.

With AT you can do brake torquing to get a good launch.

i drove both. the 6MT definately feels faster than the 5AT.

Also, the dealer I purchased my TSX from had (at the time) 4 cars and 3 were 6MT.

Quick Reply: Which is faster? 5AT or 6MT?
