Exhaust insulator hanger mod
 

If you've installed aftermarket exhaust system on your TSX, you've probably noticed how uneven the tailpipes are hanging out the rear bumper. This also happens to stock exhaust system as well. The problem is the weak stock rubber exhaust hangers. They are too soft and as a result, the exhaust system sags and move around loosely during driving. You can easily test it by moving the tailpipes side to side. The fix is to replace the 2 rear muffler hanger and 1 mid section hanger. They are the same, so you need to do all 3.

The part to replace with is Napa # 35119. The Napa hanger has exactly the same height and width. The differences are 3mm shorter in length and denser material to resist sagging. The result is great! Both tailpipes are exactly 21mm from the bottom of the exhaust opening and they don't move around loosely like before. The good part is... they are only $2.00 each!

Awesome, another cheap and efficient visual mod for under $10 (like your tb bypass).

Thought it's getting cold lately, you think I should undo my TB Bypass? I doubt it'll hit below 0*F though.

Does it count as a mod if the material is polyurethane? :tongue: But I think poly might be a little too hard and can cause unwanted vibration.

Anyone try this when theyhave the Comptech RSB? Would it possibly cause problems with the exhaust hitting the bar?

Just checking, because I plan on installing the RSB in the next few weeks, so I might as well do this at the same time. ;)

Also, how long should it take to install these once the car is on jackstands?

I have the Comptech Exhaust and RSB... PLENTY of clearence. Issue has been with other aftermarket exhausts and the Comptech RSB.

Never gets colder here than 5F here, but I had absolutely no problem with the throttle plate sticking with this mod last winter

Ry, you're the man for notifying me of this thread and JTso is the man for figuring this out. So where do I purchase these hangers? I want my rear to look balanced! :tomato:

I called 3 NAPA store fronts in Dallas and they all told me it was an order part. I am going to place an order from their web site this week. I assume some store fronts may carry them onsite though.

Yeah, I'm going to stop my local place and see if they have it. I think it'll pick my Comptechs up a little more and make it look really nice.

I'm going to be changing out the hangers tomorrow morning. My question is, can I install the hangers without unbolting the mufflers? I can't remember if it made a difference when I was installing the catback.

Yes, just spray some WD-40 on the old rubber hanger, then use a channel lock plier to squeeze the hanger off the hook. No need to unbolt anything.

Even the middle hanger? Do I have to unhang the muffler ones first to get to the middle hanger or do you think I could just wiggle it out with the rear mufflers intact?

You should do one at a time so the exhaust system is supported by the remaining hangers. It doesn't matter which one first. The middle comes out just like the muffler hanger. It's much easier to squeeze it out with the channel lock plier or a real muffler hanger tool like this one.

take some pics VB as I want to see if this really fixes the lopsidedness of the greddy exhaust.

It didn't fix the issue. It brought the mufflers more flush with the body, but there is still a very noticeable space on the left muffler than the right one... :sad: It only took 30 minutes to do (jacking up the car, replacing the hangers, lowering the car) though.

I'm wondering if we also need to change out the triangular rubber hanger on the muffler...or maybe its the way we bolted the sections together. Maybe we need to shift some of them around to get the perfect fit...

maybe you can replace the right hanger back with the OEM one so the muffler on the right will hang lower making it even with the left muffler? :dunno: :2cents:

Already thought of that preinstallation. I changed out the midpipe hanger first and then changed out the left muffler hanger to see if it would balance out. It didn't and I was pretty sure changing out the right one wouldn't help things, but I did it anyways.

Ah well...any other ideas people?

yea raelly anyone have any ideas cause its really annoying the way it is.

After changing out the hangers and realizing it didn't really do anything except bring the exhaust closer to the body, I played around with the catback. Moved it back and forth and tried to pinpoint where its off. I think it could be the connection at the midpipe. I didn't try it this morning, but I would unbolt the midpipe and kinda turn it a little to make the rear end balanced and then bolt up the midpipe again. This could work, but I'm not positive. It is annoying so i hope someone figures it out soon.

The firmer hangers probably won't work if it's a mechanical issue with how the pipes are bent. You might be able to make slight adjustment from the jointing flanges by loosening the bolts and rotate the mid pipe or muffler section.

That's what I was thinking too, but I don't have time right now to play around with it. Maybe Christmas break, I'll take another look. Just sucks that the hangers weren't the direct problem.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread... JTso :) my left muffler tip is riding far left, i.e., too close to my lip kit. I actually removed my OEM tips to replace the fastening bolt b/c I noticed how rusted up it was when I was doing a "pre-winter" inspection of my sway bar, suspension, etc. I didn't try to put the tips back until the following day... when I did, the left tip was "dangerously" close to my kit. I'm worried it'll a) melt my lip, or b) cause an annoying rattle. Any ideas how to fix it? I don't want to have to bring it to a muffler shop if I can fix it myself. I should mention that I totally stripped the crap out of the fastening bolt on the left side. I was going to replace it anyway, and add some anti-seize, but I had to drill it out to get the tip off.

It looks pretty ghetto right now... I have my right exhaust tip on, but my left muffler is going commando! LOL

hmph. harder material? that stuffs hard enough to get on and off! even lubed up with oil its still next to impossible

just for everyones info, zipties work well also in addition to the stock oem hangers. I just added two to each hanger and adjusted the mufflers to where I wanted them. this also stiffens up the muffler so it will not sway back and forth as easily.
