Lightbulb Comptech Icebox Install - Tips & More

I decided to take the Icebox plunge for my '06 TSX this weekend. After reading many reviews on this board I thought I was equipped with everything I needed to know.

So, I stuck it on the lift and removed the left-front wheel. I decided to go this route as I did not want to remove the front bumper as the instructions call for.

I then removed some bolts and fasteners to peel back the fender liner. My buddy neatly tucked it behind the brake to keep it out of the way.

The first bolt is very easy to remove. The second bolt, or "bitch" bolt as it's commonly referred to here, is just that, a royal pain in the buttocks. After peeling back more plastic from under the front bumper, we were able to fit an arm holding a ratchet wrench up into the tight space and slowly the remove the second bolt. This is not easy. Be patient if you go this route.

Once the old airbox is removed follow the directions to install the inlet horn and other parts. Fasten everything back up and move on to your airbox lid. Again, follow the instructions here.

So far I'm pleased with the new car goody. I mated the Icebox with my existing K&N panel filter to hopefully achieve maximum gains in my HP and MPG.

As I've noted before, I consistently track my fuel consumption so I hope to report at a later date with my Icebox findings. If you have any questions feel free to post and I'll do my best to answer. Thanks.

Give a good listen to the icebox lid with K&N filter. If you hear the swishing or sucking sound then your seal isn't airtight. I had an airleak which I solved by installing some weatherstripping on the inside of the Icebox lid. There is a thread about this: https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25198

Good point jlukja.

I meant to add that we had to grind the Icebox screw nipples down to get a snug fit. As it comes, there will more than likely be a little play in the lid fitment. With a little grinding, you should be good to go.

I eventually just removed them and used a couple of washers to take the play out.

The plate on that NSX is fantastic.

I'm wanting to do the Icebox too but I can't seem to find the time to do much of anything I want these days. I would love to get a lift like that once I have an actual garage and not just a driveway. Any info on that?

MOD EDIT (by moda_way): FIXED! (originally said life and clearly anyone posting here has no life... right jlukja?) hahaha

i need to clean out the k&n filter in my icebox. i think it's way overdue already. i was also thinking of adding another layer of weatherseal just to make sure the seal is tight.

nice mod. icebox ftw!

Are you talking about the 4 aluminum screw "holders"? I had trouble screwing the top of the airbox to the lower airbox. I eventually took the "holders" out and was finally able to screw them in but I was only able to screw 3 screw out of 4.(will this be a problem??) I was also thinking about attaching an additional hose clamp to the bottom of the airbox for tighter fitment(top of stock rubber hose).

Please advise. I actually just finished the install with my brother.

Thanks.

That is what I was referring to as well. We took out the holders, or nipples as I called them, grinded them down and put them back. Once we did that we were able to get a snug, air-tight fit.

Yes, I was referring to the aluminum "holders" or "sleeves" or whatever the correct term is.

A lift is definitely great to have. I'm in the process of completing the Bend Pak P6 install right now.

Thanks, if I can ever get the time to install this (I need my car constantly) you've provided a clear writeup. I've considered the icebox + lots of other stuff to get better mileage, but I also just can't justify the expense yet... after warranty, maybe.

I'm very excited for you to generate sufficient n (# of samples) so that I can run another statistics analysis and see if the icebox makes a diff... but unfortunately I bet it's going to be in the noise... Have fun!

I'm not sure if it's because we're using the K&N panel filter vs. the foam filter that comes with it, but the sleeves that come to hold the screws do not allow a tight fit. Thus, the lid will move around a tiny bit.

Test fit it and if you find you've got some movement, grind the sleeves down a bit.

I'll also note that mine is the new CT Engineering branded Icebox. They made them for Comptech but during the shuffle of ownership they dropped the branding. Thus, mine does not say Comptech on the lid.

I also rec'd the Icebox from CT Engineering. It is not branded, just a plain, molded black airbox(was looking forward to the branding). I wish they would've made the box a lil smoother but I might end up sanding it myself. Yes there were fitment issues but nothing major. You can grind the "sleeves or holders" down or just replace them with extra washers.

Overall Impressions:

Very nice subtle growl(low pitched). Im not sure if there is a big diff in gains. I have an Auto btw. Sound kind of reminds me of a shortened growl of the G35's exhaust. Not sure how much gas Ill be saving b/c now all I wanna do is tap on the gas that much harder just to hear the growl. Ill eventually get thru the phase.
Thanks again all for the replies.

I agree. The growl is nice and subtle and certainly not obnoxious. The power-band seems a bit smoother now but that's my butt-dyno speaking; which doesn't hold a lot of weight.

i had some spare time so i installed the airbox today. using the provided foam filter, the fit is snug and tight with no wiggle.

however, i came across a problem. the front two sleeves fit fine and allowed the stock screws to go in. the rear two sleeves, while being identical in length with the front two was too long and i could not screw in the rear two screws. i had to remove the sleeves to screw in the rear two screws. once i did that, the airbox is airtight.

woo hoo! icebox installed! holey jeebus does it make a difference. thing rev's so easily, the "roar" is so subtle its hardly noticeable, and you DO hear the vtec kicking in at 6000k rpm. my butt-dyno says the car got noticeably faster. even under 3000rpm, the car revs freely and has no noticeable loss of torque or power.

for the noobs: if you decide to go with the whole bumper removal route, be careful when taking off the bumper if you got a 06-08!!! the foglights are connected so do not just yank. be gentle but firm! pull out the sides of the bumpers by the headlights first and work your way toward the middle.

QUESTION: there are two places where i'm not too sure about the connections - oem hose->comptech lid and j-pipe->rubber hose that connects to the oem lower airbox. i'm really more worried about the j-pipe->rubber hose to oem lower airbox; it feels "flimsy". is it suppose to be like that? i'm think of just zip-tying those two areas and call it a day... thoughts?
