Exclamation Car topping out at 138

For the past couple days I've attempted to top my car out several times.

The only mod I have is a Injen CAI

I approach 130 MPH pretty steadily and then after that my car crawls to 135, and after a while goes up close to 140. I've been doing these pulls on flat ground in 31F weather with no added weight but myself. From what I remember I've seen people doing 140+

I'm just wondering what might be keeping me from going that extra 5 MPH. I have 3500 miles since my last oil change, and I stopped running synthetic. I also haven't cleaned my filter for 10k+ miles (but I can still see light through it).

Also, I'm aware that traveling excessive speeds is extremely dangerous, and I would love to say that I'm in control and playing it safe. However I don't do this regularly (first time I topped my car off since it's purchase) and did these pulls on empty highway roads to make sure if anyone got hurt it'll just be me.

what's the elevation/altitude you're trying this at, and what are the RPM's in sixth at the max speed you've attained.

The elevation should have been around 600ft above sea level, though that is the mean elevation throughout Illinois.

I didn't quite note the RPM (I didn't want to take my eyes off the road).

I am also asking to those who have topped their TSX out, how steady does the speed climb from 130 to your top out speed? I've only maintained my 138 for a good 15 seconds max and let off when I stopped noticing any gain in velocity.

Yeah, acceleration is pretty slow above 130. I'm not surprised to see you can't break through 140 because of the air density. 31°F is good for engine power, 0-60 acceleration, but then since the air is denser, it works against you on high speed runs. If you could find weather around 90°F, you'd be good.

Try a hot and dry evening and you may be able to go faster. Make sure your tires are at least at 35-38 PSI, and that they are no larger than the stock size. Make sure your car is clean and well waxed.

If you have a 6MT the thing is that you're dwelling just under the final Vtec stage. If you could get just a few more MPH, that would get you in the right RPM range for just a few more MPH.

If I remember right, I found the speed governor to be at 145mph.

And please choose your time and highways. I know around my area it's very rare that the time is right for speeding.

So does the cabin get very loud at 130? The reason I ask is because I find the wind-rush to be a tad offensive at or above 70 mph.

I haven't around here... but up the NJ Turnpike, if I go to my parents house, there are a few places that are really clear.

The cabin is actually pretty quite on the TSX, even at 100+ MPH. I've been in cars a lot louder at 70 MPH than this car is at 100. Even my friends ITR was pretty loud at 80 MPH, just that ever since he installed his Tanabe SH Racing Medallion exhuast is so loud you can't hear anything else.

I'll try to top out again when it gets warmer outside, hopefully it'll go faster.

Anyone out there with a Comptech SC try topping their cars out?

I hit 140 before the SC. Since getting the SC, I think the fastest I tried to go is like 125 mph. I'm sure that I could go faster though.

So is there a point to reaching max speed, because you never know what might happen. I'm not trying to jinx anything, just be careful.

The fastest I have ever had my TSX was 120 because I was trying to make it home before curfew... never ever ever again

Why do you want to go that fast?? The TSX isn't a Corvette... it's an Acura

LOL. I did 130 when I first broke in the car. That was like in 2004. I havent went pass 100 since. Trying to keep it in the two digits. 70 to 99 is good for me.

I hit 133 before I backed off. I would say wind resistance is the biggest factor...

Yea, it's scary going past 120 for me, I have to really focus or shit can get messed up. Mad props to those pro racers that can control their cars while doing 150+ MPH.

I bet if you streamline behind another faster car to cut the air friction, then you probably can hit 140.

Still, this is and

I've heard high mileage cars shouldn't use synthetic if the seals are worn. But I've never heard you can't go back to dino from synthetic.

I think I read some posts way back when about this. There have been tons of oil related threads.

i've only gone up to 140kms on the highway... this is a baby speed compared to some of the numbers i've seen on this thread.

hard to drive too fast around here. road conditions aren't the best...

That's more than fast enough. I just wanted to see what the top end of this car was. Sort of like how people want to see their 0-60 and 1/4 mile. I was more concerned that if my car didn't reach top end I thought I might be losing power somwhere?

Well I switched from synthetic to the regular stuff about 4 oil changes ago and nothing has changed with the drive. I would actually be pretty pissed if it was the case that you can't go back...

Wouldn't rolling resistance of your tires also have an effect when trying to top out? (I don't actually know)

Speed ratings for tires are safety ratings, not rolling-resistance ratings. The tread compound does affect the rolling resistance of the tires and hence your top speed, at least in theory -- it's just that at such high speeds the forces on your care are completely dominated by air resistance (which has a term that is cubic in velocity).

I was running with a Chrysler 300 with Hemi today and hit 144
Damn those things are fast! V8 with tons of torque.

And before I get I know that it was a very stupid thing to do. I normally don't hit speeds that high. I immediately felt like a jerk-off right after. Sometimes I just get caught up in the moment though. I really need to resist next time.
