CAI filter change

It's time to change my CAI filter. What's the easiest way to get to it and how do I?

That sounds like quite a bit of work just to replace the air filter...

How often should the CAI filter be changed? (same as a regular air filter?)

Would SRI be easier for replacing the filter?

How many miles did you put on the filter? It usually only needs to be cleaned and re-oiled.

This is just like telling a woman to check her blinker fluid.

Its not so bad, just take the front driver wheel off, and a few clamps from the wheel well. loosen the clamp holding the filter on the tube and remove, repeat in reverse for re-install.

SRI is much easier for cleaning

The filter is reusable

Now that might have just swayed me towards SRI mode a bit more...

It's not that hard. Take half an hour every 6 months to do this.

I didn't istall it myself. It's been about 6 months/15,000 miles, and this will be the first cleaning. No I didn't read the manual because I don't know how to read. I actually do know the whole cleaning/re-oiling process so I don't know why I said "change" it in my first post. Do I definitely have to remove the wheel or can I reach it if I turn the wheel all the way to the left? Do the clips that hold the liner in place just pop out or unscrew?

Of course you know the real reason. I'm American; enough said? The manual is actually only about 15 feet from where I'm sitting now.

What manual are you guys referring to anyway? The Acura manaul won't explain how to change or clean a CAI filter. Does the CAI filter come with a manual?

I know it had installation instructions, so I'm assuming there's something on there about cleaning it. See, now you're making me go get it!

There's nothing from Injen that tells how to access the filter. I read somewhere else on here that there are no instructions on their website. So, do I really have to remove the wheel?

No, but if I can just lay down under the car and get to it I'd rather do that.

No need to remove the wheel to get to the filter. Just turn the wheel to the left, remove some clips and bolts to the wheel liner, then peel back the liner to expose the filter.

I don't think you can get to it without removing the wheel but then again I've never tried. Thinking about it, I doubt it. You wouldn't be able to pull back the black plastic far enough to access it. Besides I think the filter is best cleaned on its own as there are I think two steps to cleaning it. No way you can do that with it still attached.

There you go. But can you properly clean the filter while its still on the car is the question.

EDIT: Your only asking how to remove it, not clean it

You can get it out pretty easily without removing the wheel. Turn the wheel all the way to the left, pop off 2 clips (using 2 flathead screwdrivers worked), and 2 bolts with a 10mm ratchet. Peel back the liner and the filter's right there. Mine doesn't even look that dirty, but since I have it out I'll clean and oil it.

I think there are cleaning kits specifically for these re-usable filters

Just a quick question, What is the difference between the Injen CAI & SRI. I know one is Short Ram mode and one is Cold Air, but what is the difference, PRO's & CON's...

Here's some interesting info on the K&N cleaning instructions noted by JTso above:

"12. PERFORMANCE HINTS
1) Service every 50,000 -100,000 miles on street driven applications.
2) Service often in off-road or heavy dust conditions or when air filter reaches 18" of restrictions.
3) Let the dirt "build-up" work for you; it will not hurt the performance and actually help filter the air."

In otherwords, 6 mos/15,000 miles is still way too soon to clean it.

I've used K&N cone filters in 3 of my prior cars. All of the filters stayed relatively clean and I stuck to the above recommendations w/o any noticeable filtering or performance issues.
