Anyone failed emission test with RT Cat?

Has anyone with the RT Cat actually failed an 'engine running' emmisions test?

I searched but only found some discussion only. I could not find any confirmation that this has happened.

You mean engine running as placing a wheel on a dyno like spinner?? I believe newer cars dont require that test until it gets aged.

In our province Ontario, a car that is at least 3 years old will need to get emissons tested when it gets re-registered. Would want to know too if the headers and cats will cuase a problem...

Canada must have strict emission testing criteria. Do they perform visual inspections as well? In WA, all they do is to connect the tester to the DTC port to look for any stored emission codes. They don't even start the engine. However, they do plug in the tailpipe sniffer on pre-OBD2 cars.

someone should change the title of this thread....it's misleading...

i thought someone had a emissions test and failed cuz of the RT cat..

I also suggest a 3-day ban for the person creating the title as it is...

Oh, sorry. Did I forget the question mark in the title ?

I thought my question in the thread was pretty clear that I'm trying to find out if anyone has failed an emissions test with the RT Cat as I'm close to ordering one.

I suggest a 5 day ban for suggesting a 3 day ban !

It doesnt really matter if it does. There are some shops that can 'help' you pass emissions. ASk around your friends and you'll probably know someone that might be about to direct you

Not sure if the magnaflow will fail as well...but i think its better for the money to get the magnaoflow cat as its a whole lot cheaper (less than $100 CDN). That way if it does fail, just swap it out and re-do the test....

This isnt true. I believe every 2-3 years for newer cars. I am not sure but they do require emission test in next 5 years maybe less.

it's pretty well tested up there. they even test the gas cap to se if it can hold pressure and not leak. They Put a car on the dyno....play this game on the monitor where you have to rev the car based on the monitor's intructions for anout 5 minutes and have it measure the output of the exhuast. The info gets fed into a database for the government.

They do pretty much the same thing here in WA with the exception of the dyno run on OBD2 cars or visual inspection. OBD2 cars are automatically pass if the gas cap is in good working condition and no ECU stored fault codes.

That sounds pretty lax. Every car no matter what..unless it's AWD (and RWD i think) will have to do the dyno run in order to pass. I use to work in a shop that ran drive-clean (that's what we call it).

Emissions testing standards in the US are pretty lax except in EPA-specified smog counties. Many parts of Virginia don't require any testing at all.

In California, we have to go through the same thing. They do visual inspection as well. The requirement for newer car is 4 years, then every 2 years thereafter.

Not everywhere in Ontario, however. Just Southern and southeastern/western. Anything in northern or northwestern Ontario doesn't require emissions testing (it all depends what address your car is registered at).

And, for DriveClean (Ontario emissions), they do a QUICK visual inspection, and then hook up the tailpipe sniffer for idle and ~2000 or ~2500 rpm tests. Every car gets tested, alternating years (odd MY cars in odd years, even MY cars in even years, starting after 4 years of age, up to 20 years of age, regardless of OBD version).

That's pretty lax to just do a visual inspection in Ottawa.. in Toronto and surrounding areas, if the car is FWD, it goes on the dyno no matter what. The shop I use to work in had to pay $$$ to put that dyno in...it's just a regular garage..not a performance shop.

They are "supposed" to do a visual inspection for ALL DriveClean tests in Ontario. They check for the basic stuff like charcoal canister, etc...

Your shop did not HAVE to put a Dyno in -- they chose to in order to become a DriveClean shop and *hopefully* get business from customers requiring testing and repairs. No shop would be forced to put in a dyno, because no shop wold be forced to become a DriveClean member garage.

Emissions testing in Canada isn't a federal thing as we've got no such thing here in Sask. Then again we don't exactly have smog alerts here.
