Ya I found that thread but there was no definitive answer and there still is'nt from what I can see.
We do know that the by-pass will cause a power loss though.

A power loss of MAYBE 2 HP. You can get bypass valves in different diameters - I think 3" & 2.5". FWIW, I have had to replace mine once (warranty) because the joint cracked.
