Would you sacrifice some power if the TSX took regular and got a few extra MPG?

Would you be willing to sacrifice a few horsepower for extra fuel efficiency, and have the engine take regular instead of premium?

Just for example, reduce the displacement to 2.0L, drop the hp down to 180hp and tq to 150 ft-lbs.
But the engine now only requires regular unleaded instead of premium, and you would get 5 extra mpg on top of what you're currently getting.

Would you do it? Just wondering.

right now? heck yeah....

people forget that the strength of the TSX is not in its POWER anyway... its in its HANDLING. So as long as I can get up to 50 and still take that 25 mph turn without hitting the brakes hell yeah I will pay a little less at the pump to take a little longer to get to 50.

I can't believe that people make such a big deal about the TSX taking premium fuel. If one drives 15,000 miles per year and averages 26 MPG and assuming the cost difference is 20 cents (between regular and premium) then we're only talking about roughly an extra $100 per year -- that equates to only $2 per week. I hardly believe that will break anyone's bank (who can afford a TSX in the first place).

I think the point is that the engine would be retuned to get more MPG on lower octane gas.

Get an 06 Accord - has almost the same performance as the TSX (same K24 engine and it's 200 lbs lighter) and gets 26/34 for milage using regular.

Used this exact same calculation to nudge my wife over the threshold in getting an MDX, where she first had reservations on it taking premium fuel. For her situation the calculation came to almost $200, but still...big whopping deal. Plus the fact that premium probably gets better fuel economy in that engine than regular, so you get some of that extra money back.

So... WAY!

Comparing a 2005 TSX and a 2005 Accord EX (4-cylinder) the difference is only 88 lbs.

Exactly.
You can go upscale a bit and get the TL which has plenty of power.

To go down a step, you would have to get an Accord, which I find downright fugly

It wouldn't make sense for both the purchaser/distributer to make the TSX less powerful and more fuel efficient.

We might as well just add a turbonator.

That change is so small (just a 1.5% difference) I'd say it's just "in the noise" and doesn't really show anything.

What 45mpg car did you come from?

And to answer your poll question... a big NO WAY. If I am concerned with the $ saved by having an extra few mpg, I wouldn't have bought a car with so much "non-essential" equipments like the TSX...

45 miles to the gallon? i bet you never see that left lane huh.

you're driving an econo car, which is what it's good for. if you're proposing that the TSX be that, then just drive it real slow. otherwise, i say 'no way'. i wished i can have my cake AND eat it too, hehe.

We the fact you're getting 20mpg less than you were before is costing you $600-700 a year, but the fact the car take premium is only costing you about an extra $100 a year. All that being said, I bet your old car didn't have 200 HP, leather, as much interior space, 17" wheels, as much storage space, HIDs, ...
