Windshield hit by a rock
I was driving about 65 mph on one of the backroads up to work...and I big semi truck coming the other way kicked up a rock and put a good size chip in my windshield
The chip is right in my line of sight. I heard that you can't get this repaired. For those who have changed their windshield, how much was it and where did you get it done?

You can get it repaired, its just that your insurance won't fix it if it's in your line of sight, they make you replace it.
When I got my oil changed (Jiffy Lube), they repaired it for free(Insurance paid, J Lube did the paper work). They called my insurance company and I told my Insurance company that it wasn't in my line of sight (even though it was) and Jiffy Lube didn't care where it was as long as they got paid.

Thanks for the info CJams.
I'll have to find a shop that will fix it for me and bill by insurance. So how good/bad does it usually look after getting fixed? I would say the chip is a little bigger than a dime.

I got my oil done at JL because it was already past 5k miles and the nearest Acura dealer about 30 miles from me. I have gotten all of the rest of my work done by the Stealership though.
I had my car less than a week when the windshield got chipped. My deductable was like $500 and the cost of a new windshield was quoted to me for $450. Not to mention the fact that there is a history of windshield noise problems with the TSX. That's why I got it fixed. The chip is a little off to the left so to me it's not in my direct line of sight, but as far as the insurance company is concerened, it's on the drivers side so they want it replaced.
The fix worked well!. You can still see where it is, but its not as big and it hasn't spread. That is the important part. One morning you can have a chip, the next morning it can be a crack accross the windshield if not adressed properly. At most it might cost you $15-20 out of pocket to fix it.

Try a hub cap at 80 mph...
Had mine replaced 3 months after I got the car back in 2003. Acura had to overnight a windshield for me. Didn't pay anything b/c my insurance has zero deductible for windshield (I pay for it of course).
BE AROUND when they replace it. MrChad and I have both had bad experiences with windshield replacements. Used to have 2 ppl do it, but now they send one and they end up leaning on the car and denting something. My dent was fairly small and over the passenger side A piller.

It hit flat on the windshield. In the last picture you can see the hub cap outline and 4 bolt holes.
The worst I've had hit a windshield is an exhaust pipe. It torpedo'd my windshield. The only reason it didn't go through is because the wiper deflect it just enough to give it an angle to bounce off. I knew this hub cap would go through, but it was an incredible bang in the car.

It was like in the movies where you see the bullet coming... except this was much larger and had some weight behind it. The wiper arm of course took the brunt of the force and redirected it. Had it come through, I would've given up my right shoulder. (FYI, this was on the 1st Gen Acura Legend Coupe).

I believe the rule of thumb is that if the crack is less than 1/2", you can repair it with epoxy. It will still leave a mark after the repair however. Do NOT press on the crack and do NOT wait. The crack can propagate at the the speed of light if enough pressure is applied.

Someone stole "My Garage"
I had a partridge (big dumb bird that is about the size of a chicken), fly into my wifes' parents' Lexus when I was driving it... my wife in the passenger seat.
The bird flew up from the shoulder of the road and smacked into the top-center of the windshield (we were going about 120 km/h). My wife was freaking because she thought the bird had come THROUGH the windshield (something fell into her lap). It was the rearview mirror - glue broke loose (as the windshield was instantly cracked/spidered).
So funny...
but yeah, it's normally cheaper to pay for a new windshield out-of-pocket than to pay the deductable. It's the rear glass that is cheaper to pay deductable for, because its more expensive. "Glass insurance" should be divided into 2 categories: windshield, w/ low/no deductable, and "other glass", with higher deductable.

After hearing all of these horror stories, I guess a chip isn't so bad. A lot of worse things could have happenned.
I just wish it wasn't directly in front of me. I'm gonna try to live with it for awhile though.

I think the message is, get someone to fill it for you so it doesn't get worse. If you let it go, then it will start to grow.

Damn....those are so nasty pics fellaz
I'm definitely gonna at least get it filled in for now. Part of me just wants to get a new windshield. I hate to see some of my precious mod money go down the drain though.

I lived with a chip in my line of sight for some time. Finally, while driving through the mall parking lot one day, I saw a guy with a tent set up doing rock chip repairs. I spoke with him briefly, and liked him and his experience.
He fixed it, no questions asked, and coordinated with my insurance on the spot.
After the fix, the chip was barely visible. Long story short?
Don't replace the windshield, get it fixed.

When my TSX got a rock chip on the driver's side, I first got the chip "repaired" with insurance paying for it, but I could still tell that there was a defect in the glass. When it was time to get the state (PA) safety inspection, I was told my vehicle would fail unless the entire windshield was replaced. For the replacement, I also ended up going through insurance. Safelite replaced the windshield, and I paid only the $100 deductible, not much more than the $50 they charge to repair chips. (The cost w/o insurance would have been about $300 to replace.) I must say that I am glad that my windshield was replaced, because I was growing tired of looking "past" the windshield defect that was basically staring me in the face, even after the attempted repair. My ...

If you guys ever need to get your windshield replaced though, don't go back to Honda/Acura. I'm in Toronto but the dealership here wanted $700+taxes for a windshield for my old 2000 Accord. I then went to Standard Auto Glass, specifically requested PPG glass (the Honda/Acura ones are made by PPG anyway, just with a Honda logo), and got it done for $280+taxes
