I can't remember where it was, but I saw a very extensive comparison of oil filters, and basically Mobil1 was the best..Fram was the worst.

So Mobile 1 5W30 Synth Mobile 1 Filter = happy happy joy joy

DEFINITELY going to Mobil at 2k (and nobody better reply about the special break-in formulation b/c I've done a study on it an proven the "extra" moly is primarily due to the assembly lube and the extra boron is just a neutralizer for the chemical breakdown of the oil)

I'm going to use OEM filters. I know people who love the Mobil 1 filters, but I have the TSX and a Civic, so I buy bulk oil filters.

my dealership said I had to use OEM filters or it would void the warranty due to some special "flow back" limiter or something

I've heard that arguement before and it is a bunch of crap. They'd have to prove that the pressure spring in an oil filter contributed to some failure before they could void any warranty. There has been a post about how modifications to the car will not void warranties under specific guidelines.

I use OEM simply because of convenience and cost.

actually the OEM filter from japan is the best followed by the assembled in the USA OEM filter, and a distant 3rd is the OEM filter made in Canada which isn't that great.

mobil 1 filters are one of the best, there are a couple of other filters that are better.

anyway, you will probably have a JDM OEM filter on the car now... take a look at that versus the canadian built one and you will see what I'm talking about.

also, as long as the (replacement) filter is better then the OEM spec one, then you will not have any issues with warranty. Mobil 1 filters will not void the warranty.

I'm definently chnaging over but I've heard its best to change over to synthetic with at least 15,000 to 20,000 km (10,000 to 12,500 miles) on the car? Any truth to this?

I can most certainly say no one can substantiate this with proven facts! As there is no harm switching to Mobil1, you can safely switch over with over 5k miles on your car or whenever you feel is appropriate for your next oil change IMO.

The only contraversey I know of is switching back and forth, the idea being that if you go synthetic, stay synthetic. What I've heard is that you can create some problems if you are constantly mixing natural based verses synthetic in your engine.

This is true.
I don't see why people would choose Syn and switch back to regular oil since Syn can go 2x longer than regular oil change interval and so the cost works out to be about the same...

I will be switching to Mobil 1. But shouldn't you switch to a 0W-20 rather than 5W-30 (Mobil1 doesn't come in 5W-20)? At least that's what Mobil recommends. Check it out.

Crap. They changed the website, and I can't find the page I was looking at.

Anyway, my oil cap says 5W-20...

Mobil 1

I will switch to Mobil 1 5-30 at my first oil change, probably 5k. Then I will change it every 7k thereafter.

One of the engineers who developed it said it could go to 7.5 k safely. They probably have improved it since then.

I will use the Acura filter.

I have two other vehicles, each with more than 180 k on them and they have only had Mobile 1 after the initial oil change.

I have a fiend with a Mercedes who says they recommend it for her vehicle.

My Acura dealer uses regular Mobil but has Mobil 1 and it costs way more so I just get it at Target or Walmart by the case and take my own.

You'd be the first to have 5W-20 on the cap and it would be a mistake. The TSX definitely takes 5W-30 b/c Honda uses Mobil oil now. The H series and previous K series used to use 5W-20, but that was a Castrol oil use back then.

Also, Walmart carries 5QT jugs of the Synthetic now, so its a better deal than the 6 qrt pack or individuals.

A lot of the civic frankensteins run the 0W-20 b/c it was better for the high compression.

As for the "who's who" of Mobil 1 use, it is a long list of which Mercedes is one. Porsche does too and that to me is a selling point alone. Think about it, the Boxster S takes 10 qrts and gets a change every 15k miles, not to mention it has 3 pumps. That's German engineering at its finest.

so do you buy mobil 1 from target/walmart and take it to your acura dealer for an oil change? or do you DIY? if you DIY, can you just take it into the acura dealer, tell them to use mobil 1 that i bought, and perform the oil change? thanks...

REI, are you saying your going to take your own oil to Acura and have them change it for you? Is that allowed? or do you plan to change the oil yourself?

For those of you that change your own oil or plan to, are there any consequences for not bringing the car to Acura for an oil change? I was planning on starting to change my own oil but wanted to see what Acura was charging for a synthetic change before deciding. I think there at about $60.00 CAD compared to $30.00 for regular.

Sorry Ebcheon, it took me a while to submit my post, so I did'nt see yours, bur as you can see REI we gave the same question.

for the past few times that I have changed oil in my 96 van and my cousins integra, we've always bought synthetic and then used the mobil one filter... shit that filter was expensive, we are looking at 11 dollars US at autozone, and then then oil itself is not cheap either, 5 bucks a Qt. , but my friend keeps on telling me to switch to redline oil? supposed to protect better, but im thinking that in such a young car, I don't think you can tell the difference between redline and mobil one, comparatively, if you use redline in a older car with 1xx,xxx milage, then the redline might be comparatively better for the engine.

Do they actually make an acura filter? or does it say honda on it? anyway, as i stated above, if the filter is made in japan it's a very good filter, next best is the one assembled in the US, and the worst of the 3 filters (OEM) is the made in Canada one.

if you want the Mobil 1 filter, it's at least as good (if not better) as the JDM OEM Honda/Acura filter..... but expensive.

Change the oil myself on the other vehicles. I asked my Acurta dealer about the cost of using Mobile 1 and they advised I just bring my own in to them to save money. They also advised I use an Acura filter whther I do it or they do. Runs about $7.

I can tell you right now, you can get the Honda filter from TONS of sites, in bulk for about $4 each (and that's not the canadian one).

There really isn't an Acura filter that I know of, they all say Honda.

The only reason I don't use the Mobil 1 filter is cost. I have a buddy who has used them on his Prelude from the beginning and loves them.

Regard of what filter I uses, I change my Mobil 1 with the filter every 4500 miles. Some people say you don't have to worry about the filter everytime. The next time you get or do the oil change, open it up and tell me if you shouldn't change the filter everytime (synthetic or not).

My theory is, each time the oil get changed, so does the filter.

your theory is good... i do the same except with the civic hybrid which the owner's manual says not to change it every time... oil change is done every 5000 miles, and oil and filter is changed every 10,000 miles. The oil and filter at those intervals looks real good (very clean).

Actually, I recall my wife's Civic having the exact same schedule.

I do use synthetic in her car, but I definitely see a need in her car's oil filter to be changed. Many factors in my area I think contribute to it needing to be changed, which may not be the same as where you live.

i follow the schedule because it's really expensive oil (0W-20) from Honda... after seeing the oil after 3 changes now, i'm satisfied that the schedule is correct, the oil comes out almost the same color as it went in... the filter also looks great.
