Why would my '08 feel peppier than my '06?

The only difference between the two cars is the TPMS, right? So what would make my '08 peppier than my '06? My '06 Auto always shifted well below redline. My '08 has no problem going right up to it (it may even be a bit faster when Vtec has engaged). Did they tune the engine at all between the two?

good question.

I don't suppose this has been asked before.

did you have the '06 since it was new?
and the same for the '08?

I have no peppiness problems at all on my 08

Both new. My '06 was totalled, God rest her soul. Both broken in the same way, albeit, I was a bit more impatient and went back to driving normally after 1000 miles on my '08.

The ECU is supposed to adjust to your driving style. Perhaps you drove the 06 with more fuel economy in mind whereas you drive the 08 with performance in mind?

there were some changes to intake/exhaust for 06+ that might explain the difference? this is for the 06, but i'm sure it applies for the 07/08's too. this is taken from hondata's website.

The 06 TSX has the following improvements:

Increased intake flow:

Intake valve + 1 mm oversize
Intake cam High lift lobe with 0.9 mm more lift and 12 degrees more duration
Throttle body increased from 60-64mm
Radius on some intake pipes increased from 70-80mm
Increased exhaust flow

Exhaust Head pipe increased frm 60-65mm
Higher flow catalytic converter
Main (single) exhaust pipe increased from 54-57mm
Rear (twin) pipes increased in diameter from 42.5 to 45mm
Block improvements:

Additional air passages in crankcase for reduced pumping losses
Other

Stronger conrods
New crankshaft with more counterbalance weight
Revised pistons with more valve-piston clearance
Cams:

The exhaust cam is bigger on the primaries and secondary lobes than any other Honda made K series cam. The intake has larger primary lobes than any other K series Honda cam and a type R secondary lobe. If you have to use Honda cams, use 06 TSX cams.

It's definitely broken in now. I have put over 5k miles on it since I bought it at the end of April.

I misread your post. I thought your 08 is less peppier than your 06.

Some would consider 5k still "breaking in". I did my first oil change at 3k, even though they recommend to do it longer so the special factory oil has more time with the engine.

I think it's just your perception. Jumping from a 2 year old car to a brand new car, you'll be sure to notice or imagine differences.

That, and I don't think you took care of your 06 to keep it up with a brand new car. Did you clean out the injectors, pistons, etc. prior to totaling your 06? Because I'm pretty sure your 08 won't have as much gunk on it than the 06.

I was about to say the same thing johnny, if the 08's engine has already been broken in, it should be fine.

I reset my ECU after my Engine break in period and I noticed a difference in performance.

It felt a bit sluggish before the reset because the ECU learned the old driving habits that were relative to the conservative driving style of the engine breaking in period.

I maintained my '06 quite regularly, yes. I also changed my oil every 3k miles on both vehicles.

I've become more satisfied with the speed of the TSX lately after making a specific effort to climb the RPMs early on. Before I tended to shift right away (like you're supposed to generaly) and was too much on torque (what torque?), and what I was neglecting to observe is that in 1st gear 7,000 seems weak but once you drop it to second you're already up to 5,000 RPMs instead of maybe 2,000, so the car hauls ass. The problem is that it makes a lot of noise revving that high so it's a balancing act but I've become much happier since figuring out how to negotiate high RPMs with city driving.

is resetting the ECU a DIY thing?

Yes. All you need to do is disconnect the battery for a minute or two. Just make sure you have all your radio and navi security codes before you do cause you'll need them.

Really? Am I forgetting something? ... (David goes to ) ... can't find where I might've read it. Something about it adapts to your acceleration level, and modifies shift points appropriately? I've noticed this past week with my daughter, I need to get into traffic fast, after driving like Grand'ma, squirt more gas the engine and the 5AT lets the engine crawl up to 5500 or so before shifting.

Might do that after my daughter flies out. I like having my alternate memory seat position the "full forward with tray table up and locked" so she can get out on the driver's side easily.
