Who has higher miles?

Hello all, first post but I've been lurking for a while now. My question is, for those of you with higher miles, how is your car holding up? I'm thinking about picking up an '04 or '05 6MT with about 50K and am curious to know how the mechanicals of these cars do as the miles get up in the 80K+ range. I've done some reading on here and am generally pleased with what I've seen, but am looking for a few testimonials from some enthusiasts. Thanks in advance,

KJ

P.S. This is a great site, BTW.

go for the 05 6mt and have them put in gm synchromesh fluid in ... something like that ... to make sure you dont have the notorious third gear problem

I have almost 81K on my '04 6MT / NAVI ... I have had to replace the A/C compressor & the front brakes.. Aside from those it's been great. ( Of course, the brake job was to be expected. )

I have ran synthetic oil in the car since I owned it, and am fairly meticulous about preventive maintenance. It seems to be paying off, as I am still getting 30+ miles per gallon.

Overall... I am very happy with the car..!

I have 120,000+ Miles on my '04 6MT TSX now

And it's holding up great. I just keep up with all of the scheduled maintainance and have replaced normal wear and tear parts like brakes and the clutch. I have also kept it on Mobil1 Full Synthetic since the first oil change. Other than that, no problems whatsoever...besides the radio backlights going out, which was covered under warranty.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I would be weary of switching to synthetic on a car w/ 50K miles. Maybe I'll get lucky and find one whose owner has done it since day one. Anything else from anyone?

Probably get burned for this, but if you're going to buy a car with that many miles on it (and plan on keeping it for a while), I'd suggest buying an automatic. I enjoy a stick as much as the next guy, but for high miles I think you'd find the auto more reliable (and less concern about how it was treated for those first 50K or 60K miles). (05 auto w/ 62K miles here).

Get an MT! (sorry Simba) Its SO much more fun and feels faster. Although it's true that the TSX 6MT doesn't have the best synchros; but even if it fails after a few years, you can always buy another used tranny for about $1K + $600 labor, but it's worth the extra power, economy, and fun. (although expect it to be fine for quite some time).

I'd love you know your trick. I'm lucky to see 20 mpg on my 05 6MT

this is scaring me a little bit, would the synchros be covered under warranty? I have 6 years/100,000 on mine and I'm at 43k right now. It's time to sell when powertrain warranty runs out

I've got 85k on my '04 AT and it still feels like new. The only problem I had was the drivers door lock actuator went out and the backlight for one of the heated seat switches burned out, but these were covered under my extended warranty. Otherwise, she's rock solid.

120K + on my 04 MT. everything holds up great no wears or tears. only bad thing is that the speakers rattle just a tad bit. clutch feels like stock still and shifts like butter, all oem.

The Misses' '04 AT has about 57k and still runs fine. Changed the oil every 3-4k with Mobil 1.

Only issues were the radio lights going out, but that was covered under warranty. Other than that, the car still runs like new.

My '05 MT has about 37k, and the same regimen. Still runs like a champ.

Only issue is 2nd is a little notchy but, it could be the wifey, that's what she thinks. The last time I drove it, it felt fine to me.

Just about at 50,500 miles. Probs with 04 all fixed under warranty were the moving drivers seat, 6cd changer defective, cd storage bin broken, 2 rattles, taillight harness recall, and condensation in headlights recall.

I think you're the only one I know that you and your wife drive the same car, at least you have the same love of cars!

I went out with a girl once who also had the same CG TSX as me, but it didn't work out.

my dad's mechanic tells us to switch all high-mileage cars to synthetic. not sure why you'd be worried to switch it.

for the record, my 2006 tsx is at 34,000 miles in 23 months. i've had some issues, but none were mechanical really. the wipers went very early and started squeaking on my windshield.

i have the brake shuddering problem that was supposedly a TSB but the dealer would not honor it because of my mileage, saying it could be because of my driving, and not because of what the TSB says. i've yet to follow up, but i am probably just gonna get after market brakes anyways.

Well from what I've been told, the seals that are formed using conventional oils during the break-in period can be more easily penetrated by the synthetic oils, which are a little bit thinner. It won't do damage to the engine, but you're increasing the chances of developing leaks.

I don't have real-world experience with this, but it makes sense to me.

Synthetic oil isn't thinner.

How about a new question, has anyone switched to synthetic after say 50K miles and developed burn-off or leak issues? Thanks,

KJ

bought the car used (2004 6MT) with 43k... prev owner used non-syn oil....switched to synthetic right away (mobile 1 w/ mobile 1 filter)... and i've put on 27k since then.. no burn off, no leakage.. I change her out every 7.5k miles and it's always as full as when first put oil in after the oil change.

That isn't correct. A SAE 5w-30 engine oil can be anywhere between 9.5-12.2 (I think) cST @ 100C. Any oil that tests out in that given viscosity range can be considered a xw-30. There are similar specifications for the 5 portion of the rating system. Point is, it is up to the oil blender as far as whether he wants the oil to be blended toward the low, middle, or high-end of that scale...and oil type isn't the determining factor. However, I must also add that synthetic oils may flow more easily at very, very low temperatures...

BTW...I've switched a VW diesel over to Rotella 5W40 at 150k+ miles, no leaks or abnormal consumption (not that I care). But I personally never use synthetic oils unless it is required by the OEM because it isn't necessary.

My wife's 04 has 88,000 miles. We have had a few problems with the car, some fixed under the warranty, and the rest . The car still runs well and I am crossing my fingers about the future. I hope to keep it for at least 4 more years.

'04 with just under 44k....probably about average miles. I take good care of her, though. Bought her with 16k, and change the oil every 5000 miles.

i just got 51,300 miles now. with all the people with higher miles, do you go for an oil change every 3,000, 5,000 miles or 10,000 miles?

I've used Mobil 1 oil and filters since the first oil change at 3500.
My oil change intervals with synthetic are around 7500mis.

were those all expensive to repair? i wanted to know if it's worth keeping the TSX that many miles.
