READINGTON (AP) -- An FBI agent was killed Thursday in a shootout with suspected bank robbers, according to a law enforcement official.
A press conference is expected to begin at 2:15 p.m. or later on the events.
One law enforcement official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the agent's family had not been told of his death, said the agent was alive when brought to University Hospital in Newark by helicopter, but efforts to save him failed.
"He didn't make it," the official said.
Other law enforcement officials, who also spoke only on the condition of anonymity, ssaid FBI agents were investigating a string of recent bank robberies in Central
Jersey when they came upon the robbery suspects leaving a PNC bank near Route 22 in Readington late Thursday morning, around 11:30 a.m.
A shootout ensued, and the agent was hit with gunfire.
Two of the suspects were captured and one fled to nearby woods, an official said. State and local authorities were searching for the suspect with helicopters and dogs. Reports said the suspect could be on foot or in a vehicle.
At 1:30 p.m., police shot down Route 28 and Lamington Road as they searched for the suspect. At 2 p.m., police also shut down Interstate 78's Exit 26 (Rattlesnake Road.) Police agencies are using police dogs and helicopters in the search. Scanner reports place the suspect in Bridgewater, Raritan and along Interstate 78.
The at-large suspects is described as a heavy-set black or Hispanic male, with a tear-drop tattoo near his right eye, possible carrying an assault rifle or handgun. He is wearing a tan, hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, and one shoe.
Police reports indicate that the supect might have ordered a sandwich in a Quick Chek on Route 22 in Branchburg before leaving on foot.
FBI, state and local police units have cordoned off a wide are in the hope of capturing the suspect.
The FBI agent was reportedly wounded when responding to the scene of the bank robbery, possible with other members of an FBI SWAT team. The suspects were believed to be holding a hostage or hostages inside the bank.
Police briefly surrounded the Quick Chek before racing off to other locations. Police have issued a bulletin with the suspects' descriptions to all police agencies in Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Union, Essex and Warren counties.
Dawn Graner, a bookkeeper at Arvins Garden Center off Route 22 in Readington, said she saw two men laying down in the parking lot near a bank across the street.
"Big commotion going on out there," she said.
Graner said authorities told employees not to leave the building because they were
"looking for somebody," but she said authorities didn't provide any additional
information.

Yeah, and the craziest part might be that I was in the middle of it while it was all going down. I had gone out to get my lunch at 11:35 and almost got hit by an unmarked police van flying down Rt. 22 with no lights or sirens on. I was turning at the light at the Quick Chek mentioned in the article above and narrowly missed getting clobbered. Then on my way back to the office, one of the helicopters landed about 100ft from my car while I was sitting at another light. About 6 or so cops went flying by me, then I saw my mom go by! She called a couple minutes later and said she nearly ran over 2 FBI agents who ran across Rt. 22 in front of her car on their way to the bank!
And now we're getting snow flurries. It's APRIL for God's sake!!

CNN removed the headline after a while. It was what they had the story of the CNN building shooting under. One of the CNN staff reporters was in the lobby when the shooting occured. As he tried to get out of the way to safety, the shooter ran at him with his gun out and screamed at him "Get outta my way, pimpin!" (exact quote)
