where to get air cleaner element and dust/pollen filter (15k maintenance)

where to get air cleaner element and dust/pollen filter (15k maintenance)

I am going to be doing my 15k maintenance at home, and I was wondering for replacing the air cleaner element and dust/pollen filter, do you have to get that at the acura dealership? Or perhaps its just a generic part you can get at an autozone?

i got mine at the dealer. its about $50....even the parts guy was like 'these things sure are expensive'

I usually try to buy parts from my local honda dealer (they are closer) but the said it wasnt a honda part.

air cleaner element should be cheap enough. You may want to consider getting a drop in K&N? Its more expensive than a regular air cleaner but you wont' need to replace it...Just clean it every 10,000 miles.

As for the dust/pollen filter (I assume thats the one for in the cabin).. I'm not sure if that is a honda only part, or if you can get it at an autozone type store.

I'm quite hesitant in recommending aftermarket drop-in reusable filters as many of them don't seem to seal well, even when they seal well, they often don't filter very well.

Dirt from the air filter can easily lead to a scored bearing on these Honda/Acura engines built with very tight tolerances.

Fram or any other brand air filters and in-cabin microfilters will do the job. The key with air filter is to make sure that they seal well. Replace the air filter and PCV valve every 20K or so as they load up with dirt rather quickly.

so.. are there any other opinions on the genuine vs. aftermarket?

I'm probably going to get the air cleaner element (air filter right) at autozone and maybe by the dust/pollen filter at the dealership or from ebay.

hey i just got off the phone with south coast acura (in southern california), and they said they don't do those 2 filter changes till 30k?????

The K&N filters are the ones that dont seem to filter too well. If you hold it up to the light, you can actually see the holes with the sunlight shining through. The K&N filter actually depends on the dirt that it traps first to imrove filtration later on down the line.
Amsoil is a different story. Amsoil has been proven to filter better and actually gave me more HP and better gas mileage in my 4runner.

Here, read up on this site. This guy here is worshipped on many Toyota forums and he does his own tests and dynos as well. This guy knows his stuff.

For a paper filter that seems like a long time. Maybe the air in california is super clean? lol, um no...

you can change those filters whenever you want. i just eyeball it, and have changed them both at my 15k maintenance. both my filters were dirty when i took them out.

Why would you need to replace the PCV valve? Just take it out and spray carburetor cleaner through it. The inside only contains a valve and a spring. Carb cleaner will remove the gummy build up.

if you read the manual it says 30k for normal and 15k if you are in a dusy environment. just clean it when it looks dirty. Mine was pretty bad after 30k.

Not yet. I used one in my 4runner. I haven't gone to it in the TSX becaue i'm still good with the original stock filter (only have 4000 miles). But when i had it in my 4runner you could actually feel the huge difference in power. The throttle was much more responsive. Plus i get much better gas mileage. Not only that, i saved a ton of money for the 3-4 years that i had it in there. I just washed, reoiled, and reused once a year.

That's the thing though, you have to be very good in not over oiling the filter. Even brand new, I had to step on my filter (with paper towels on each side and newspaper on top) to get all the oil to ooze out and still it managed to coat the wire inside my Mass Air Flow Sensor. I cleaned by simply opening up the little door and using a cotton swap and alcohol and LIGHTLY swapping the wire. (I also had a 4Runner.) I had enough of that dilema to deal with that from now on, I'm sticking to stock for the air filter.

My friend didn't listen to me, and he did alot more damage in his '04 lightning. Although his was a true flow airfilter, it still pretty much the same design and it managed to damage his IAC valve, and oddly enough his MAF also. Finally took it out and threw it away (after of course Ford almost hammered him with a bill for the two items).

It is true, it does help with throttle response (I don't know about power though, that's subjective in my opinion) but at what cost are you willing to do it, at the cost of a containmated intake down the line? My opinion like I said...

Don't get the filters from the Acura dealer...major hike in price. My dealer quoted me $50 for one. The current Accord pollen filter fits perfectly with the TSX; found them and bought some for $16 each from a Honda dealer. The acuraparts247 website has a great price for the air filter.

The Toyota forums recommended to just take a stack of paper towels on either side of the filter and stand on them after oiling. That pretty much fixes your over oiling problem. I didn't really have a problem with the oil ruining a MAF sensor. I actually would have the stealership service dept do the amsoil wash, dry (they used a shop vac to vacumn dry), and reoil. This way, if they damaged something while i was still under warranty, they installed the part. lol
But seriously though, i never really had a problem. You should clean your MAF sensor once in a while anyways.

hey guys i went to acuraparts247 and just wanted to make sure these were the right parts:

Stop by your local Honda dealer and pick one up for the accord/TL. It's half the price and works just as well. Though it might make your TSX what like 89% Japananese instead of 90%. LOL

It's pretty easy. Just open your hood, take the top off of your airbox, and replace the old filter with the new one

Find the FAQ for online manuals. Follow the links to the 2004 owners manual. P. 261 has the description to remove the air cleaner filter.

Save the PDF to your computer, as that section has DIY instructions for things that later manuals said, "Take to your dealer for servicing."

Awesome. I'm creeping up on 15k (well, more like running after having to make a last minute trip out of state) and was looking at replacing the cabin air filter. I got the car CPO, and I know they're supposed to change it as part of the CPO process, but I'm sure they didn't as the car only had 3200 miles on it and was less than 6 mos old. Very good to know that the 04 manual has good instructions for that.

Question though. Is there any difference between the $50 Acura filter or the $30 Bosch filter from autozone? The one from acuraoemparts.com is listed on their site at $30 and I'm not sure about shipping.

this is what i used to replace mine, it has pictures and different part numbers from a few different vendors. be sure to read the whole post, there's some additional comments on how everyone did it.

i just got the purolater one from pepboys, it was like $12

So reviving this thread from the dead again ... I'm interested in opinions on engine air cleaner filters. I've been using a K&N during the cooler months, when pollen isn't quite so bad, and read here the Amsoil (EAA234?) was "better." According to Bob the Oil Guy's tests, the Amsoil oiled foam filter really wasn't any better or worse than the K&N at trapping dirt.

A coworker who does rally racing regularly just told me that for a car getting oil changes after races, or frequently (every 1000 miles), this isn't an issue, but for a daily driver, maybe the conventional paper is superior. She sees the oil go dark pretty fast in her Miata equipped with a K&N. Based on that, she uses OEM paper in her S2000.

So among the paper filters ... are there clear favorites? Would the Honda/Acura filters (17220-RBB-A00 for the TSX, I reckon; 17220-RAA-A00 for the Accord) be superior to cheaper ones, enough so to be worth $5 more (mail order)?

Are there multiple Amsoils? I.e. the "EA" filters are like paper, only better? Or is that Monster Cable style marketing hype?

I got K&N in stock box and yes oil becomes dark after 3k miles. I mean light brown. I touched it inside the tube that leads air to intake manifold and it was clean. As for noise, paper 1 was quieter a bit. I am really not sure if K&N lets any dirt through and that leads to the oil becoming darker, but that is what I hear. Any opinions?
