When stepping on the accelerator

I hear a high pitched whining noise at highway speeds which disappear when I take my foot off but reappear when I step on the gas again.

anyone ever noticed this?

I was kinda thinking about posting this myself. Now I am not sure whether we both are talking about the exact same problem..I'd try to explain it in little more detail and you tell me whether both problems are same or not.

In my case what happens is let's say I have been driving on a highway at a continuous speed of about 45-50 mph for about 4-5 min at about 2K RPM. All of a sudden, traffic loosens up and I step on the gas..no obvious increase in RPM and car does not seem to pick up speed and that's when I hear this whinning noise (albeit not that loud)..at this point of time, If I keep applying steady pressure on accelertor, nothing happens, RPM remains more or less at 2. Now, if i remove my foot or try to press it harder or all the way down, then all of a sudden, RPM shoots up to 4 RPM and the sound kinda goes away.. Happens to me everyday on a particular strech of highway where it is slightly uphill. On the same route in opposite direction, I never noticed the problem.

I don't know how else to explain this problem but i was thinking of taking it to dealership on my next oil change. I have about 2200 miles on my 06 AT.

Yup, I have this on my '06 6MT TSX too. I guess this is the noise that some people complain about that the car is too noisy on the highway.

In my opinion I rank it up there with the infamous clutch 'clicking' sound - it's not a "in your face kind of sound" but it can get annoying if you focus on it. I've just gotten use to both.

Are you guys by any chance using an FM modulator to listen to an mp3 player through the stereo?

I had a very similar problem when I was using an FM modulator on my old car. The pitch of the whine was exactly in line with the RPMs.

I have the same issue as you but I was told this is perfectly normal on auto '05. I have the same year. It has to do with the transmision. Perfectly normal. It sounds like it's ringing right.

Yeah, are we talking alternator whine where the sound is coming through the speakers or is this a noise coming from the engine compartment?

I get the same low whine at highway speeds. You let off and it's gone, push the gas pedal and it's back. I've heard it's from the transmission and it's normal. Others can chime in to verify this. BTW I have an 04 5AT.

Sounds normal to me. I don't really notice the whining in my car.

I have an '04 AT and have none of the described sounds whatsoever. A shot in the dark would be to really check all your vacumm and return lines. You may have an air leak or possibly a sensor that's not properly seated. Take nothing for granted.

04 MT, and I get that whining once in a while. It sounds like the whining sound from the speakers but my radio was off. Plus, it sounds very smooth and even, increasing in pitch with RPM. So I think it is a mechanically generated sound.

06 MT - I think I've heard what you are referring to. Sounds like gear whine more than anything else. I've heard it in other cars as well, so I wouldn't get too worried.

It's an extremely faint noise that probably 5 out 10 people wouldn't even notice, if we are referring to the same one.

Got it as well ('06 MT). Doesn't bother me much anymore.

Maybe I'm retarded but could it be coming from the intake? Why else would it sound like that only when we're on the gas?

never heard the sound in my 04AT or 06MT.
AT used to always drop the RPMS down to 1800 or so but 06MT ..I can't seem to drop the RPM below 3000. On normal driving (cruising) the rpms 0n 6th gear are at 3600...drop it down to 4 and way I go.

The gearing in the MT is a lot shorter than the gearing in the AT, which is the cause for 1) the higher RPMs at cruising speed and 2) the lower MPG rating on the highway. Not too common really (as far as MPG is concerned), but it makes better use of the motor, so well worth it.

I'm getting the sense that we are discussing many different problems.

one would be the electromagnetic interference with the radio, typical of FM modulators, but I've also experienced it listening the radio in a weak radio signal area (on my old Civic)... this noise should go away if you turn off the radio.

two is the transmission whine for a 5AT, which I read in another thread on this site is linked to the torque converter.

three seems to be some driveline whine in the 6MT. can't say I heard that one on mine, but i only have 4500 miles so far...

For the driveline whine, you have to have complete silence, good hearing, perfect conditions, etc etc.

I hear it maybe once a week, and then once I hear it takes a while to "forget" about it. It's not very noticeable. If you have the radio on, you'll likely not hear it.

I hear that whine every time I drive the car ('06 6MT). I thought it was the very faint sound of the timing chain doing it's job. All my previous cars have had timing belts.

since i started the thread, what you have as number two is my number one.
can you point to the torque converter explanation of this noise?

After a while, I still find it very noticible. It kind of sucks because we spend most of our times between 58 and 65 on highway. I think that's the range i hear it at.

Heard it too:

But the two times I have noticed this noise, was after I left my car for three days on long term parkings. Not sure if it was just me missing the other times, but any of you see this similar?

Hmm. The noise I hear when I let off the gas sounds like sandpaper on wood. The weird thing is that it's not constant. And it doesn't gradually fade in and out. It just appears and disappears, sounding like slow morse code done with sandpaper. I can't hear it at highway speeds, due to the road noise...Car has to be quiet to be really noticeable - no radio, and windows closed.

Have you all noticed that we have both TL and TSX owners responding here about (presumably) the same noise?

I have gear whine, most noticeable around 30 - 40 mph ('04 AT). Let off on the gas and it goes away. Prob get it checked just in case next time i take it in for an oil change.

The only time I ever heard a whine in my TSX was when I was using a set of DVD players, connected into the AUX jack. Somehow, the DVD player/wire was playing back the engine RPM through the sound system...

I disagree. I think the shorter gearing in the top gear is a bad thing. It makes the car noiser, makes gas mileage worse (which is really sad considering the 6MT has an extra gear over the 5AT yet gets worse highway mileage), and makes 5th gear just about worthless.

BTW, my '06 6MT non-navi also has this engine whine issue that sounds a lot like a ground loop problem, but I'm not sure the sound is really coming from the speakers.

Unless you hear the whine coming from the engine area, the gear whine enters the cabin through the gear shifter. Just put your head down there while (someone else of course!) driving. You'll hear a high pitch whine that increases and decreases with acceleration/deceleration.

Funny, I drove to whistler recently and I didn't notice much of a whining noise at
Highway speeds. My sound happens more at lower speeds. I changed the serpentine belt
so it's not that even though the Acura mechanic thought it was. I took it to a different mechanic for a quick listen and he thinks it's the alternator. Have a listen to my video,
It would be nice to get some opinions before I take it to the garage. Thanks.

I have the exact same problem, but I think it's worse only when my girl is in the car too. But she whines because of the lack of torque.
