What is a or the Vtec?

I hear you guys talking about the Vtec on our engines (I searched but no answer), and was wondering what it was exactly. you keep saying I can't or don't hear my Vtec as often, whats that?

he explanation can be long. But I'll make it shorter.

First, you have to know what is valve, and camshaft in order to understand how VTEC works.

VTEC stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control. Like the name suggest, the electronics control the valve. At low RPM, the valve moves 'normally'. Intake valve opens, piston goes down and prepares for combustion when it comes back up.

But when it runs at higher RPM, 5000rpm for example, the valve will be opening at the rate of 2500 times per minute, which is insanely fast. So the air will have trouble going into the combustion chamber. What VTEC does is controlling the intake valve to open earlier than intake stroke, allowing more air into the chamber, hence better combustion.

With VTEC at higher RPM, there's more power than car's without VTEC. But you can't simply engage VTEC at lower RPM, because different engine speed will require different valve timing to achieve maximum performance. VTEC electronically controls the camshaft timing.

There's a few type of VTEC, which is correct. On high performance VTEC engines, the VTEC is tuned for high performance. Cars like S2000, Prelude, Type-Rs etc. and they are usually DOHC VTEC.

For cars like Civic, Accord, the VTEC is tuned for 'balance', efficiency and performance. They are often known as SOHC VTEC.

VTEC-E is tuned for insane milage, hence the E(efficiency).

[i didn't write this up btw]

basically your car needs more OOMPH at higher RPMS, so what the computer tells the car to do is, use alternate lobes on the camshaft, in easy terms, it opens the valves up more, alot more air in, then computer adds more fuel, changes timing and presto, more power up top

The TSX needs a lot of VTEC fluid too. Some people have VTEC buttons on VTEC equipped car, but those cost a lot. To keep the TSX running in tip-top shape, you need to fill the VTEC fluid to the top every three months. If you use VTEC too much, you need to fill it up every 2 months.

I told Acura to take off my VTEC because VTEC fluid cost a lot now.

Just about every car nowadays has this sort of variable timing, so its nothing all that special.

At age 16, I'm sure I'll corner you sometime on something you don't know either.

You could give the kid a break. He's still at school. I know I didn't know much about cars when I had that age. Hell, I was still fooling around with my Lego blocks.

It must have been one of those things that sound good at the moment. Then you look back on it and go
