What kind of jack do you use?

I did a search on this and did not find anything. For those who change their own wheels from winter to summer, what kind of jack do you use? Will just the ordinary bottle jack work fine or do you need something special?

I want something over and above the jack that comes with the TSX.

It is definitly worth what I paid for it. Makes raising my car up everytime I change my suspension height or change wheels (which I do frequently) very easy.

I would go with the second one you posted. it you have lowerd your car or plan to at all you will have trouble getting it under your car at all.

I have a Craftsman 4-and-half-ton bottle jack because I don't have a place to store a floor jack. The bottle jack lift the frontal wheels with the minimum clearance off the ground. It allows me change engine oil and such, but I think floor jack would be a lot more useful.

Good idea. Because the one I used for swapping wheels my Accord 1999 FAILED! Nothing unusual, ground even.

There is a plastic socket that just decided to give up.

I was lucky because my wheel was still on (I put wood blocks anyway).

I filed a complaint. I guess Honda did not care because it is not supposed to be used for regular wheels swap.

Ahhh, a good valid question, and something I forgot to mention. I have to use the jack that comes with the car to jack on one side up first, then place the bottle jack under the car. It's pretty ghetto I know.

Well I went cheap for a change and got a floor jack for 22.50 Cdn on sale. I believe that it is this one.

I expect only to use it twice a year, up and down a total of eight times, which is 80 times over 10 years, so I think it will be up for the task.

I changed my winter wheels over to the OEM wheels today. I had an impact wrench to help get the winter wheels nuts off but did not have the right socket to take put the OEM nuts on so used the tire wrench that came with the car. I know how to tighten it and hope that they are all on tight enough.

Where are the jack points on this car?

On my old BMW, I would lift by the front crossframe or the rear differential. There were re-inforced pads on the 4 corners to put the stands under.

How are you guys lifting the TSX? Where do you put the stands?

They don't take up that much space man. Put it in your bedroom or something if you have to. You'll be able to sleep easier looking at it and knowing that if you suddenly need to lift your car it'll be easy

I use the OEM jack for the winter-summer changeover, and that's about it. I figure it gets 8 lifts per year, and every spring and fall after I change the tires over, I spray the jacks' moving part with silicone lube to keep it from seizing, so when I do need it on the side of the road (hopefully never), it won't be seized.

Yes, I still use a jackstand on the corner I'm working on, although the weight is still usually mostly on the jack. If it were to fail, the axle stand would catch the car no problem and I'd be safe.

For working on the brakes or inspecting stuff in the wheelwell, I'd strictly use the axle stand and never trust any jack (common sense).

For those of you who use floor jacks, Eastwood Co. makes an adapter that fits the OEM TSX stock lift point perfectly. They also have an adapter that has a thick rubber pad which will not mar the underside if you chose to use the center front lift point. I have both and they work well.

my friend picked up a Blue Point race jack from snap-on, which i used when i changed my fog bulbs...man that thing is light as hell. makes my craftsman look feel like a friggin brick!

Its in the center just forward of the rear bumper. It looks like two rectangular loops coming together at one edge. It can be used as a point to attach a rope & hook too.

hate to resurrect this thread, but i'm just wondering if those of you who bought that low-profile jack from sears have suffered any issues with it? i was looking to get one but it received such horrible reviews. i don't know if i should go to the local autozone, napa, or pep boys to see if there are some other options. thanks.

I didn't realize it got those terrible reviews until after I bought it. So far I haven't had any problems with it. It may be a case of happy customers not posting and unhappy customers finding a way to vent. However, if you can find something comparable for a similar price I would probably get that just based on the reviews alone.

good point. the likelihood of angry owners posting is probably greater than those who are happy.

i'll have to look around locally to see if there are any places that sell a low-profile jack w/ the specs everyone is mentioning (17" lift). thanks for the suggestion.

haha. better be nice for over $300 bucks.

but i can't really spend that much on it. just need something that's somewhat reliable and easily stored in a closet. maybe i'll pick up one of those when i actually have a house/garage.

the one I bought. when I went to sears they had that one, and a low profile one for 180. so I took the cheap route. it fit nicely under my 2.5" lowered civic. plus it comes in a convient carrying case if you need to move it around.

Although you wouldn't be able to store it in your closet, I absolutely love my DK20, even a couple of my friends bought them after they checked out mine. Best damn jack made...no doubt! I only paid $220 for mine though




I also have a couple of friends that use the Harbor Freight aluminum jack, something to check out and it's light.

I got it through a friend who also bought one. I think we paid in the $250 - $270 range. Having the ability to drop the car at the speed you want is a very nice feature.

some of these jacks have a max range of 14-3/4" or 15". That doesn't seem to be enough, in my experience, to lift the car using the front or rear jacking point and have the tires clear the ground. Unless you use some kind of spacer.
